brittis on this occasion being the third annual territorial tar far F aji ajl I 1 can with propriety say that thab we have progressed bp beyond ond my expectation in in agricultural manufacturing and stock raising although labori laboring ilg tig under many disadvantages that other territories do not in in consequence ot of our isolated situation and specially those of this year the nature nature of our soils is is singular and interesting they are supported li by salt and and have produced good crops every year from 7 to 10 years without any manure and the lat years is 13 equal to or better than the first glrst our salera saiera tug swamps when we first located this place were counted useless but by cultivation draining plowing and arid exposing to frosts and rains the salt has been washed away or evaporated and arid they have bave become the thie moat productive raising from goto eis els dis per er acre in 1847 this country appeared to be a barren parched waste unoccupied nor even thought worth cultivating and avid now supports fifty fifth or sixty thousands our lands can be occupied to the thi best advantage in raising wheat barley oats and roots the root rook culture is is particularly recommended for the use of cattle cattie e sheep ngheip arid cows this season easo n president youn youngs youns s land has produced largely with but little I 1 labor a bor when flax and hemp hepp were first ral rai raised in thi this s place th the elint int was so poor forwe we were almost discouraged but I 1 am I 1 lappy tappy to state that the quality this year ca cannot n be excelled ia in ady any anyplace place and the crop crop is larcer larger than all our produce c collectively before co cotton uon has been produced in he the southerly part of this territory and will we hope when acclimate j and arit arlt the ground pre prepared prep pared parea areu produce abundantly our efforts in rais rals raising ing sugar cane have been successful and I 1 feel confident that we will soon be able abla to supply ourselves plentifully with sugar and molasses s our specimens of p native and other dyestuffs dye stuffs grow grown n berg here are good and with proper attention will be invaluable to which I 1 hopshe notice of farr farmers hirs hars and others m will ill iii be turned our country is is well supplied f nera is lg for fon dying and bleaching vii vil viz alum copperas and sulphur tobacco has been cultivated successfully on a smaller scalp showing qualities ot of the best growth ja attention should be paid to 0 o the crowth r growth of this plant to prevent an outlay in the abst b pay ot of some of some 75 a year I 1 vas was interested to perceive the tea ta plant produced in this place and no doub doubt demay we may yet et produce a fine article to supply i a portion of the large demand for that useful beverage our show of stock was excel excellent lent leht and to kether nether g ether with cattle could not be surpassed in the union much pains and expense have babe been bestowed to select and import the finest quality equality of Devonshire and durham cattle and ind r those exhibited were of prime breed and order the horses were especially hin fin fief and I 1 pe perceive that much improvement has been made b by mixing the breeds the health and durability of horses i in n this place placa are most remarkable able abie they will perform mo and endure morel more hards hardship aj than any hava L have hav seen or read of which I 1 attribute to the climate and fine mount mountain aiu alu grass which is used here and to 10 the care in selecting ng good breeds bleeds within the last three years our ur wee sheep pa thou though h not numerous at the fair were biece excellent 1 ent t the h e saxony southdown and cheviot were in good condition and of good size and I 1 am happy to state from good information that they have been raised in double the number this year which augurs well for our prosperity our country is well adapted for wool growing great improvement of late has been attained in hogs as was seen by the numbers brought in from my experience I 1 can add that we can reap great advantages by crossing the breed of stock they will rei ref require luire BO no more feed the weight of cattle sheep aind nd hogs will be increased and recommending this to be carefully attended to I 1 know the raiders vill ili iii be beauch much stimulated stimulated and well paid for their trouble the show of vegetables was highly 1 creditable notwithstanding proper roper attenni attention on could not hot be given to tb thein their air curf curt culture ure in consequence of our recent movements I 1 was much pleased to see be the fine lampies samples I 1 may say for information and encouragement that several kinds of vegetables rege tables talles and roots were purchased by stranger visitors who do BO so to take them to ito their in the states great encouragement is is given to us by the U S homolo society as I 1 perceive by a letter tetter which I 1 have received from from marshal P wilder esar president of the U S agricultural and society we had visitors from every state in the union who examined and tasted our varieties of fruit and pronounced them equal to any anything thin they ever saw home manufactures were generally good and displayed talent of high order we would gould recommend in the stron strongest t est terms the encouragement ra of our artists as a great medium to accomplish com the results for which our society is is laboring the expense of transportation will ever be a protecting tariff to the manufacturer which will enable eim him if encouraged to compete with importations claths cloths were ere unexceptionable tio the texture and coloring fine and attractive many pieces were highly suitable I 1 e for tor this territory I 1 would like to have this article entered into largely by men of capital and I 1 think that the increase of ot sheep will soon enable erable lethis this branch ranch b of business to occupy the time and talents of enterprising js the ai 1 of cutlery were choice and numerous and show what whai with a little enter enterprise prize can be accomplished finely cut and wrought nails fit of various kinds were in abundance guns revolvers and land other fine pieces of mechanism attracted ted the attention of all interested and arid showed that mechanics and machinery here will yet accomplish wonders the show of leather was not so large as hitherto but wab was of excellent quality and bears a competition with imported material and pricie price we say the tanners have done dorie well weil and hope they will accomplish more in that usef useful il branch the ladies work apartment ap pared appeared choice and tasteful tasteful arid and showed snowed that they iove love industrious trio frio 1 us habits and produce e articles both useful and oin oln ornamental some of the shawls cloaks quilts quits needlework ac c could not beur passed and reflect credit on their perseverance amid the many domestic duties which are their lots to perform throughout the whole I 1 am pl pleased with the productions and the spirited manner in in which the things were competed I 1 could not have eak expected acted that under our peculiar pecullar circumstances it would have been so good dood and look forward with pleasure to our next for a hearty response to
