Show LETTER from N biggins to president young manti april 9 1854 BR BF YOUNG dear sir yours of the ath alt was thankfully received pr lost last mail the indians around this place appear perfectly friendly quite a number of tile the have lately visited us A few are here now tho the most of them have loft left aa as they came in for some provisions saying that their friends were hungry and so soona as s they could procure a few pounds of flour to carry to their suffering friends they were off some two or three came in a few days ago go saying that a small party were encamped on salt creek in the sevier valley who were on oil the point of starvation I 1 immediately dispatched one of them to the camp with some hour flour the brethren who went to cottonwood to build a fort have completed the wall which is twelve and a half by sixteen and a half rods two feet thick and seven feet high they are now building rooms inside of the fort placing a stick of timber on the top of the wall to support ort the roof of the rooms abich makes the fort wall about eight feet high some some of them h have ave remo removed v ed their families in the remainder will have their families there soon many of them are now putting in their crops ind and I 1 think from three to five hundred acres of land will be tilled there this season I 1 bishops lowry and allred have had the management again ent of the collecting the amount due captain stevens command and bishop lowry has promised me to report to you forthwith he has collected about one hur hundred ared and thirty bushels of wheat on oil those claims we are building a new fort of stone and ado bies enclosing about fifty nine acres of land the temple block in the centre alsol also enclosing the old stone fort and grist mill the wall of this fort is three feet thick at the foundation and eight I 1 feet eight high the easT basir walls are nearly completed and considerable work done on the other three lines should we be blessed with and heath I 1 think we will celebrate the ath of july on the temple block with a good wall around us your your brother in the gospel MANTI fell feb 1854 1654 MR EDITOR I 1 dear sir feeling that your numerous readers would be glad to hear how bow things are progressing in hi san pete valley I 1 will give you a sketch of things in general on the ath dinst the new grist mill owned by isaac morley coriey co made its first effort at grinding I 1 and you would jump for joy too if you had have I 1 j been forced to eat bread made out oi of wheat crack j ed a d on a hand mill as long as many of our citizens have tills this mill is constructed upon a different principle from any other that I 1 ever saw as the spindle that drives tile the stones is above them in place of below them I 1 on the ath dinst amigo alias elick the chief of I 1 the san pitch tribe that ass alsted sted in killing bros nelson luke read and dark clark sent san one of his band with two other warriors into this place to make peace the pipe of peace was smoked and they returned to their camp at new denmark and on saturday last amigo with the principal part of his tribe came in an and since that time lime they have been dropping in one at a time un til I 1 should thier t there here wis was fifteen or twenty warriors he here rebut but it if is almost impossible to tell how i many of them there are as they are going the 1 j rounds all the time the cry being shet cup they 1 1 make every every demonstration of peace amigo says i i that he be had a dream and in that dream the lord i told hin not to fight the tha mormons cormons but to make peace with them and he ha shows a ring that he made on his arm that he might remember his dream their story is that walker and agrapine will be in in iii the spring and that they will brin bring 9 back the horses that they have stolen and that th they wish to make peace aur our fort wall 1 is progress progressing ill rapidly it is three feet thick at the bottom it is ft 1 be 22 0 inches at the top and eight feet high to bo be built of limestone I 1 the snow on the mountains is very deep from all appearances but we have had bad but little in this valley only enough to make good sleighing which has aided us very much in hauling stone for the fort wall there has not been to exceed four jays days but what the brethren could go about the work that they had to do either out or indoors we are much in want of a good saw mill but bros higgins and chose chase are one which will most likely run by 1st ast of may next fifty families intend moving from this place to pine creek 6 miles distant in the spring they are now building a fort there as for dimensions I 1 have not learned much stock has been driven out there lately by those to work there as the range is better belter there than here and feed is remarkably scarce here this winter wheat is very seare scarce here but I 1 think we will have enough to bread us wheat speculators will have to egypt some place else next spring to buy wheat to speculate on oil as san pete valley will have but very little if any to spare but let not this deter oily any person from coming to san pete to live for if he is a good saint he will not eo growl w I 1 to live as his brethren do and the b brethren here r will see no one suffer as long as they have I 1 have extended this letter further than I 1 intended to I 1 am yours A L SILER N B I 1 forgot to state that amigo has brought it in some of the articles taken from the brethren at the head of the valley when they killed them A L S report of the Q aarum MR has however bo wever been ascherin ascertained airlee that the use of manures rich in iodine enable the vine to resist these destroyers in certain districts sea weeds are ordinarily used as manure in those parts in in which chic h the amount of iodine inthe soil may average the vines have entirely escaped ed CENEN CEMENT T FOR BELTING C phelps of sa lemM lemmess siss states in the scientific american that he has had bad in constant use for eight years a six inch belt which is jointed with biars russian assian isinglass as a substitute for rivets the isinglass for this purpose is applied in the same manner that glue is applied to join pieces pieces of wood together the end of 0 the belt elt to be thus cemented should be f for or about six inches lengthwise then a strong solution of isinglass applied and the surfaces so treated brought brou alit together to zether and held fast by joiners screws screws until they are perfectly dry it might be well 15 says mr phelps to ro put a row of small tacks along the thin edge of the scarf and clinch them firm firmly V 3 we would state although we have ne never ver used asin isinglass lass for ceni cementing enting belting we have oftentimes used it for cementing celentino leather for various purposes and have found it to answer well |
