1961 same amount that was in force' during the preceding - mi year The levy was tentatively set at 21 mills last December when the 1961 budget was adopted But with an additional $4600 to be collected by the Terrace from the newly-enactehalf per cent sales tax the amount was dropped back to 20 mills Mayor Stanley W Poulsen said the county sales tax income would pay for half the amount budgeted' for the city's capital improvements during the year Nineteen mills will go for general city pur- poses and one mill for the special improvement guarantee fund The city's 1961 budget is $146000 ! hi li slopes east of here was reported in hand this morning crew was on the scene but a n today continuing the fight The blaze broke out about 2 pm Wednesday below the Highline Canal at 1700 N Mountain Road At the peak of the battle as many as 45 Forest Service men county fire fighters and volunteers were deployed against the flames Also called into action was a Forest Service plane which launched an aerial assault on the widening blaze district Kenneth O Maughan forest ranger said this morning the source of the fire was as yet undetermined It started on the north side of Garner Canyon in sage grass and scrub oak eventuCanally spreading into there from yon The county brush truck and crew got between the fire and ditch at an early hour were almost trapped managed to slip out at one end of fire front and moved the above CROSSED BRIDGE "But by the time they could get to a bridge cross the stream and return to the fire flames had jumped the ditch in a dozen places and started up the canyon" said John Rose the county's assistant fire chief Mr Rose said the withering oak brush flames had the tinder-drto feed on and the brush might as well have been soaked with kerosene From there the fire spread into the narrow canyons and was virtually impossible to battle from the ground At this point a converted Navy plane was called into action to dump more than a ton of a mixture into
