| Show DISCOURSE py ae y president 1857 brigham young tabernacle I 1 noy hoy e reported reported BY ily GEO D WATT J much has been said here today to day with regard to that class who are unruly and who are subject to do evil 11 T presume the great clouded geat majone majority acthia congregation have concluded to place all those remarks upon those who do not come to meeting doubtless the t few yes the very few characters cha that have been leen referred to by kv the brethren today to day areat are at home borne studying mischief it is very seldom that you will find a thief in abs tbs thi s housea house a person plunders his neighbors but if you will go gp into the streets vou you will wili bind find nd certain persona persons in in the different wards who have an excuse for not pot attending meeting some are so very industrious dust rious that they cannot attend meeting I 1 would not doubt much but what we could now po go to several houses bouses and find women omen at w work ork they are so very industrious and it is often the case that some men are so industrious that they cannot find time to get a load of wood without going gong for it or returning with it on sunday that is is really the case with those vho who do not love they have haie embraced Irac edit it because they know it is is true and thinht will shield them in their iniquity it is seldom that such persons come to meeting I 1 conclude that the remarks which have been made today to day are designed for those persons who are disposed to do evil but there is probably only oni a very few fe arnono or none of that class present and ve we v e bhail shail have to depend upon you ou to tell them what has his been said about them I 1 am thankful that it is my honest conviction that there are ore but a very tev lew of that class in our community there are a great agrest many people who do wrong because they have not the standard of right ani and wrong within them but bat permit themselves to be governed by the prejudices and education they have hare received among the dif dlf different derent nations and neighborhoods v here they have hat e been bein trained you may find some persons who have within them the standard et right and wrong they can tell when they do light what that is righting tight right and ani ind judge themselves as easily eily elly eliy as they can others but of this class there are but a yei yer ver r deiv rev tev and were I 1 to say that there are lone ib free flom from the prejudices and ind prepossessed ideal gathered in tb 1 i 1 f da dall dail from their parents par crits teachers deac h e lys rib and friends ri ends I 1 should say what hat 14 is strictly true still w ve e are studying anu and and trying to learn cern ern between the evil and the good the right and ind the wrong between that which is of god and ind that which Is not of him this people are mostly gathered from what are ire termed the laboring and middle classes we have not gathered into this church men that are by the world esteemed profound in their principles ideas and judgment behave we have none in this church that ape aie are called by them expert statesmen how frequently it is cast at the elders when they are abroad preaching that joseph smith the founder of their church and religion was only a poor illiterate boy that used to be advanced as one of the strongest arguments that could be produced against the doctrine of salvation by the wise wisa and learned of this world though it is no lie argument at all the lord should have revealed himself to some gome of the learned priests or talented men of the they who could have done some good and borne kofl the gospel by their iti influence fluence and learning and not to a poor ignorant ignorant unlettered youth not many wise not many mighty not many noble speaking after the manner of men mail are called but god hath bath chosen the foolish things of the world to don doh confound found the wise the weak things of the world to confound the things that are mighty and arid base things of the world things which are despised by the world hath bath god in his wisdom chosen yea and thi things which are not to bring to naught wt things that are that no flesh should glory in his presence imen amen were too wise in the days of the savior to receive the gospel and we see the same disposition exhibited in our day the world spurn the idea of receiving truth from a person they look upon as inferior to them in the talent learning and cunning of the present generation perhaps they might I 1 bow to the requirements of heaven were an angel to personally visit them individually and exalt them to high hiah places and give them the influence power and glory that is of this world we have none of those hose men here we are all of the laboring and arid middle classes there are but few in lit this church who are not of the labori laboring nm 0 class and they have not had all an opportunity to cultivate their minds to search into the history of the nations of the earth to learn the prejudices that are upon the people their education feelings and customs we have mostly come from the plow and the f furrow arrow f from rom the mechanic shops and the loom from the spinning jenny the kitchen and washroom wash room this people have e not been educated in the deviltry and craft of the learned classes of mankind and consequently possessed honesty enough to embrace the truth that lis jis s the character of the class of people before me today to day who is capable of judging we do not look for that talent and great judgment from the common people that we would naturally expect from those who are called the refined and educated there must be an opportunity given them for improvement before we can expect the same refinement and classical attainments which the higher classes so sol called boast of the higher classes have nothing to do only to study the nature of man their own dispositions and those of their fellow beings we can look upon them as they really are and arid deiy deiv truly tru we are compelled to conclude that the deviltry atry mischief dishonesty craf t corruption etc that are taught and practiced among the higler higher c lasses classes have prevented them from receiving the gospel gospe 1 but the poor half halt starved laborers those who feel as a though they want a friend who wio look around for some source of ha happiness iness for some arm to lean on for some ay eye e to pity them are the ones who have honesty enough to receive the truth what should we such a class of people I 1 have my reasons for justifying and my reasons for condemning I 1 have my re reasons a sons for liking this people and my reasons for disliking the conductor conduct of some and I 1 believe that I 1 look upon them very vety very much as the lord does doel he ils els pities aties the human family they are objects of uis uia mercy and commiseration there vere are men inthis community who through the force of the education they have received from their parents and friends would ouid cheat a poor widow out of her last cow and then go down clown upon their eeb ees and thank god for the good fortune he had sent them and for his kind ind provi dences that enabled them hem to obtain a cow without becoming amenable to any law of the land thol tho the poor widow had been actually cheated we see that trait of character in mankind are such persons capable in all things of rightly discerning between truth and arid error no but they through their traditions can judge every person but themselves they can weigh veigh every person in their scale of justice st ce but they 1 never think of trying themselves that proceeds from the force of education and false tradition upon their minds and some still remain ignorant of many of the true principles of right and wro wrong g although they have embraced the gospel br kimball told the truth this morning wit with h regard 1 to mardof mariy marly of our mechanics I 1 hape hare not dot bi built it a house since I 1 have been in this place but what I 1 have furnished many inore lnore more pounds of nails than I 1 would have hare to for the same piece of work in the states I 1 knew that some of the workmen wor Ic trien took imand th em and I 1 told them BO so they need not undertake to deceive me for I 1 know precisely what they do since the days of reformation I 1 have had hao many wany a one come to me honest men to ail ali all appearance men that you would woula almost have sworn were as holy as all an angel and confess that they had stolen nails from ie me or a wagan aa but buit they have not yet become honest enough enogh to bring the stolen articles back in what condition are they after such h a confession without making restito i ion ilon compensation or orsome same kind hind 4 kind ind of tion lion just atit as they alyere before afo r e T to me tak jak ak log in and li keeping belling another an others ys property prop without leave is stealing but to may many they consider it a godsend god send to have ari ati an others nalls naila to carry home in their pockets that often ia is the consequence of tradition rather than all an innate disposition to steal I 1 will relate a circumstance to corroborate that statement I 1 once knew a man in this church who told me that when he was in the old country he would if possible spoil his bis work in order to be employed to do it again ile he was a plumber and glazier As soon as lie he had finis finished lied a fine window or a large bash sash for a hot house in a gent lemans garden he be would place it lit in a situation where it would be sure to 10 be broken to pieces that i be might inight thereby secure employment arid and when lie received the second job he would thank god for his kind provi dences toward him to him in lit his tradition and amid the oppression of the laboring classes that was just as honest as anything 11 could be but here they are not so 0 oppressed p e ed to trl ibis s slay day if I 1 f you e employ ampi 0 v in masons marons ason s to d do 0 a val nabie piece of work many will ivill BO so do it that the wall or building will vill last only afew a few years and then believe that to be honesty whereas I 1 believe it to be dishonesty and joiners with few exceptions will sohyang doors put tip up mantle pieces put on rolfs arid and lay jay floors that in lit a short time all their work is out of repair or good for nothing very many through the power of erroneous education do not know what honesty and dish dishonesty anesty are and are not dot capable of judging observe the artisans artisan ar in any branch of mechanism and you will learn that what I 1 have stated is true irue then you may take the class called merchants also the doctor doctors the priests in inthe the various sects the layers lasers and every person engaged in any branch of business throughout the world and as a general thing they are arc all taught from their childhood to be more or less dishonest those who have their eyes opened to see arid and understand where honesty and uprightness is what righteousness is and to discern between that which is right and that which is wrong of often ten rise here and talk about it I 1 do so myself and when I 1 speak of dishonesty among the people I 1 lo 10 look ok at them as they are whether I 1 tell it or not this is the most honest people on the earth there is more honesty in this community than thanin in any other community on the earth that is that we have any kno eno knowledge of the great majority of this community are as honest as they know how to be I 1 have stated that I 1 had not dot found a man honest enough to bring back what be had taken from me but gut those persons are poor and can make a reasonable excuse one of the best men I 1 ever hired to labor for me roe one whom I 1 paid well for all he did for me took some of my tools that is to say lie he borrowed them and never brought t them back well lie he i is poor will I 1 forgive for z t ive lve him yes they may ma steal from me as much as they please a and a I 1 will forgive them as far as they ought to be forgiven ahey they thay may say 4 y you 0 a have pl plenty enty br brigham bri am that is true 2 and a 1 d so far as I 1 can remember I 1 have never dever stolen a pins worth in any way shape or manner except the taking taki 0 a few melons me I 1 ons or a litt itt 1 lefruit 0 once nce i in D a wh while j e when I 1 was a boy bov have I 1 cheate cheated any of j you or wronged alry airy any of you in in any way if I 1 j have dave I 1 would aou 14 be glad gladdo to have you tell me wherein have I 1 oppressed lie laborer it in his wages va if I 1 have let theman thiman come arid and tell me of it some thin think k that lam iam I 1 am very v ery close and economical I 1 am and I 1 will wiil tell teil you wherein when a man mail comes to labor for me one who will only leisurely do two or three hours work in a day and wants as much pay as a s a h man who w he will do six times as much mich I 1 am not willing t to 0 pay him for idling away his time if I 1 have a aman man labor for me who can do six days work in one did lit I 1 ever refuse to pay him for the amount of i labor he be performed ask isaac hunter if I 1 ever refused to pay him wages to the full amount of labor he could perform in a day in this valley we have estimated laying rock in a wall vall to be worth one dollar a perch askane ask any mason when lie he perch in a day if 1 I 1 ever refused to pay him ten dollars dollar 9 but if a man wanted three dollars and a half for lay a y j ing trig one perch I 1 am not willing to pay him at that rate I 1 will suppress dishonesty but I 1 never oppress honesty honest 37 I 1 have tried to suppress s up press dishonesty in individuals and aud have llave tried therell thereby y to make them hern lione ilone li onest Qt 1 1 if I 1 hire a acarl carpenter anter and pay him three dollars a day and arid he be is three days in making a six panel door that a good g mcd workman ii i call can make maice malce in one or even a door and a half I 1 do not dot want to pay him hirn three dollars a day for that labor yet some who are here have no more judgment discretion or idea of light i or wrong than tj want to be paid for labor not perl perform grin brin add and that they consider to be honesty but it is just aa as dishonest as anything iu lit the hie world I 1 am willing to pay men for what they do I 1 am anxious that all should have that which belongs lo 10 them and wih them thern to let that which belongs 11 lo 10 rne me alone if I 1 furnish nails naus lo 10 build a house the tile workmen have no right lo 10 carry tl them iem lem ot off using nails nalls the often has more or less in his pocket at fl time lime he forgets to take them out and carries home hegges he gees out to chop a little wood and says dear me these 1 someno or SO 30 and perhaps more are quite a burden to rne me and lie he put puts them hem on out ont t of his way by and by lie wants to build a pigpen eli eri ell or to build a little addition to ill lil his hig house and fee fees B quite thankful that he has liaa the nails to do it w with ith and atil praise the name namo of the he lord tor for the manner in which I 1 i he lias bles bies blessed bleE sed him I 1 do not want blessings oil on such grounds and I 1 alever never expect thern them in that way because I 1 have the natural sense to know better batter others also wi will 1 I 1 have it it if they will conti continue nue pue to try to gad had ou out t J how row I 1 ow lo 10 judge adge between rient and wrong i in the themselves as chev do in another iw Y you 0 may gra laih elih iti h ua tho 11 we q do go I 1 not qt have many in these days arld and to bishops courts and hear a trial between parties that have meled with each pach other and you will readily rp adaily perceive that if those individuals could judee themselves as they judge each other there would hav have been no difficulty |
