Show I 1 copyright secured 1 HISTORY OF JOSEPH SMITH JANu january Any ary jan 29 I 1 attended meeting at the temple after reading the parable paralle of the CI son and making some preliminary remark remarks I 1 stated that there were two questions which had been asked me concerning my subject of the ia last t sabbath aich which I 1 had promised to answer in ill public ile ilc and would improve this opportunity the question arose from fron the sating saying of jesus samong among those choso that are born of women there hath bath not I 1 isen lsen a greater prophet than john the baat st nevertheless he that is least in the kill 1111 kingdom I 1 of heaven is greater than he how is it that john was consi considered dered one ono of the greatest of prophets ilis his miracles 0 could dould not have constituted his greatness firstly ile lie was wag in trusted with a divine mission of preparing the way before tile the face of the lord whoever had such ucil a trust rust committed to him before or since no man secondly la ia was in trusted with the important import ant tnt mission and it was required at his hands to bap lizo the tha son of man whoever had ind the tile honor of doing that whoever had so great a privilege and glory whoever led the son of god into the tha waters of or baptism and had bad the privilege of beholding the tile holy ghost descend in the form of a dove ar or rather in the tiie si sign an of a dov in witness of that administration the sign of the dove was instituted before tile tiie creation of the world a witness for thet loly ghost and the devil cannot come inthe in the of a dove the holy ghost is a personage in the form of a personage it does not confine itself to the form of ot a dove but in sign of a dove tilo tile hoty holy ghost cannot tr hi transformed into a dove dow but the sign of a dove was given to john to signify the tho truth of the deed BS as the dove ban van an emblem or token of biath truth and innocence thirdly john at th tint thit it time was the tha only legal admi administrator in tile the affairs of tile tilo kingdom there was wras then on the tha earth and holding the keys af of power the jews had to obey his instructions or be te darr darn damned ined by their own law and christ himself fulfilled all righteousness righteous nesi in becoming obedient to the law which be hid had h id given to moses moes on the mount and thereby magnified L it and made it honorable instead of destroying destroy ing inc it the son sot oc of Zacha zachairah ilah wrested the tile keas the tho kingdom t he the power the glory from the tile jews by i he the holy anointing and decree of heaven and these three ahrea reason reasons constitute hlin blin the greatest prophet born of a oman woman S second question flow was the least in the kingdom nedom of heaven greater th ahm n iier lie lle in in reply I 1 asked who did jesus have reference to as being tile the least jesus war wat looked upon as having the tile least claim in all gods kingdom and was least entitled to their credulity as a prophet as though lie he had said sald lie lle ile lle aliat is considered the least leist amone among you is b greater than john that thit is myself in reference to the prodigal son I 1 said it was a subject I 1 had never dwelt upon that it was wa understood der stood by many to be one of the intricate subjects of the tile scripture Scrip turea lurea and even the ahe elders of this tilis church have preached largely upon upla it without having any rule rulo of interpretation what is tile the ruie rule of interpretation just no vo interpretation at au understand it precisely as it reads I 1 have a ecy icy by which I 1 understand the scriptures I 1 inquire what wag waa the question which drew out the answer or caused jesus to utter tiie tha parable it is ignot not national n it does not riot refer to abraham israel or the gentiles in a national capacity as some supposed to ascertain its meaning we must dig up the root loot an aad and ascertain what it wag was that drew the saying out of jesus while jesus was teaching the tile people all the publicans public ans and sinners drew near to hear him and the pha pharisees Pharis r ise ees es and scribes murmured saying this man mail receive recel recci veth th sinners and leateth with them this is the key word which unlocks tt tre tte e parable of or the prodigal son it was given to answer the murmurings murmur ings and questionings of the sadducees and pharisees Pharis ees who were querying finding fault faulty and saying now how flow is it that this man as great as he pretends to be eats with pub licano and sinners jesus was not put to it so but he could have found something to illustrate his subject if he lie had designed it for a nation or nations hat he did not it was for men in an individual capaci capacity and all straining on this th s point is 13 a bubble bubblo this man receive th sinners arid and daleth with ith them and he this parable unto them what man of you 5 ou having a hundred sheep if he h lose one of them doth not leav leave e the ninety and nine in the wilderness and go after that which is lost until lie find it and when he hath found it lie labeth it oil on his shoulders rejoicing jo icing and brien he cometh home he cal calleta leth together his friends and neighbors baying saying 1 1 unto them rejoice with me for I 1 have found round my sheep which was lost I 1 say unto you that likewise joy shall be bb in heaven 0 over ver one shiner sinner that teth mor ethan over ninety and nine just persons which need no repentance the hundred sheep represent one hundred sadducees and pharisees Pharis ees ns though jesus had sald saiu if vou you sad duches and pharisees Pharis ees are in the sheep sheepfold rold I 1 have no mission for you I 1 am sent to look up sheep that are lost and when I 1 have found them I 1 will back them up and make joy in it heaven this represents a few individuals or one oae poor publican which the pharisees Pharis ees and sadducees despised t he fie also gave them the be parable of the woman and her ten pieces of silver and how she lost one and searching diligently found it again which gave more joy among the friends and ne neighbors than the ha nine which were not lost ilki like like ilke I 1 say unto von vou there is joy in it the presence of the angels of god over one sinner that teth more than over ninety and nine jus just 1 I persons that are so righteous they will be damned anyhow you cannot save them monday 30 spent the day nt tit
