Show THE WHALE FISHERY the importations of sperm and whale oil and whalebone into the united states la in 1854 1851 were as follows barrels sperm 1 barrels whale oil whalebone pounds la in 1853 the importations werey were sperm til tit barrels whale barrels whale whalebone boney pounds there have been no exports bf b whale oil from the port of new bedford during the years and 1851 the amount of oil and bone on hand jannary january ij ism ISO in the united states as nearly as could be ascertained was as follows sperm whale bone the stock of sperm oil has been well exhausted exhaust edy and Is held at very high prices A lar jar large stock block of whale oil remains on handa hand band about thred fourths of the importation having been used in 1854 about ships cruised in the northern seass beas seas two of which were lost and 60 50 of which are reported to have cruised in the arctic seey seep sea and have mostly been reported off the ground with an average catch of about bals each and ships from the and other grounds with an average catch of about 1000 abla there has been a diminution of IS 18 ships and barks 8 brigs and 4 schooners achoo ners in the whale fishery during the past year yeary with an aggregate tonnage of SWI smi the number of ships added to the fleet from this city during the tha past year was 8 number withdrawn and lost 12 the number of ships and barks employed in the fishery from this district Is brigs 9 3 with an aggregate tonnage of the number owned in this city is ships and barks brigs 1 I schooners ners I 1 total tonnage the average catch of vessels in the during the tha past year was one thousand barrels which Is a very fair business but the fleet did little or nothing in tha the arctic and the general average Is therefore ej reduced to a little rittia less than barrels in thia this connection we would mention that there was an aggregate of tons built in this district in the years 1853 54 of which tons were added to the merchant service and tons to the whale fishery during the past year there have been fave five ships and one ona bark amounting to 2800 tons withdrawn from the tha chalis fishery and nearly all of them put into the tha merchant ser vice ide there have been lost at sea during the year yeary six shipp hippi one bark and one brig amounting to 2806 2809 tons I 1 making the aggregate of tons lost and withdrawn lu in this district there have been added to the whale fishery six ships six barks amounting to tons showing a diminution of 1164 tons for the year 1854 |
