Show HOW TO RAISE INDIAN CORN EDS I have tried nearly all the ways recommended for raising raisin g indian corn and have found the following to be the best in the spring I 1 haul all the manure I 1 can spare on some som e piece of sward ground and put it in heaps I 1 defer ploughing sloughing plou piou hing until near the time of planting when I 1 spread the manure and turn it under with much care cara I 1 then roll it with a heavy roller lengthwise of the furrows and harrow it well the iye same way I 1 mark it out both ways three feet and four inches plant the corn about an inch deep and nse use the cultivator three times limes both ways at the second time of going th through it with the tile cultivator I 1 follow with the tile loe ioe hoe bioc and clean out all the grass and weeds in the hill but I 1 never haul dirt to tile corn I 1 make imade no hill as I 1 think it does more hurt than good and at the time of gathering my crop the tile ground is as smooth and level nearly as an oat eat or rye field I 1 hive pursued the above method for three years and have usually reaped about 50 bushels corn to the acre the tile last season I 1 raised at least 75 bushels of shelled corn to the acre by the tile same in ethod method I 1 can now raise from 50 to 75 bushels to the acre as easily as I 1 formerly could 15 to SO 20 and it is all through the information I 1 have received from the cultivator A PRACTICAL FARMER westchester co N Y dec 1 1849 |
