Show " "w'wvr-v- r rr-- vn v -- THE DEbERET 10 Pag HEWS Salt Lakr.City, Utah Saturday, dune 3, 1U - i- 'U onft J ir mm . Jr. FatStock Show v Biggest in United States H, By W. D. Porter Chairman, publicity committee, Junior Fat Stock Show Club and Hundreds of Utah Future Farmers of America boys and girls today had put the fin- ishlng touches on the ilnest lot of cattle, lambs and hogs that have ever been produced in the state by these organizations, and were ready to truck their entries 'to the Eighth Annual 'Junior Fat Stock Show which opens next June 5 at the Union Stock Yards at North Salt Lake. Never before In the history of the state have so many fat calves, hogs and sheep been assembled Club members by FFA and 'to be entered In one exhibit and .later sold tinder the auctioneer's Shammer to the Irighest bidders. ' The , biggest surprise of the show will be the fat cattle classes . where officials estimate 700 calves will be entered as compared with . 437 last-- - year. Because the boys . snd girls have had several years . ; of experience now In selecting, feeding, fitting and showing thjtr a high percentage .of ' animals, these 700 bovines should rate to-. ward the top. " To round- - out the show, about I 300 sheep and 250 hogs will be on display, making 1,250 head of '.livestock for the youngsters to exhibit, the judges to judge, the visitors tb see, the auctioneers to sell and th. buyers to buy. Now, to get a better picture ol the prominence of this North Sail Lake show, lets compare It with . some of the livestock events held . .this year in other states. Spokane Washington 4hought4Hvas destin ed to have the top ranking show in the West the forepart of May but their cattle roster contained ' 527 baby beef as compared with . ;the Intermountain's 700 At Reno's show only 24 steers, 40 lambs and 33 hogs were entered and at Ida ho Falls, 43 steers, 38 lambs and ; 106 hogs went through the rings Price Prospects Bright High prices paid to the Juniors last year, no doubt, has some- thing to do with the larger entry . 'in 1944. Last June the floor price for cattle hovered around 26 cents oa pound and the lambs and hogs sold for premium prices right ; down the line. What the prices will be this . , year is still anybodys guess but my livestock friends tell me they j iwlll be pretty good and above - At the Idaho Falls show, choice ' steers wenr for an average ol 124 cents; good steers at 164; end the commercials at 154- - Lambs ' sold for $21.30 a hundred and prime hogs at $14 60 Although Im ; no prophet. Ill venture to predict that the sale at North Salt Lake, June 6, will hit above these fig-- ! , ; ures. Where are these animals coming from anywey? 1 made a suramong Utah Future Farmer vey Clubs and chapters and1 the Is what found: Emery Coun- .this - tv will probably lead the list with about 175 head of cattle 90 from . Clubs and 85 from FFA chap- ters. These boys will also have . good entries In hogs and sheep Cache will come next with lib Club and 50 cattle 69 from from FFA boys. This county will also send 22 sheep and 20 hog3. , The two FFA chaters in Box Elder County will furnish 68 cat- tie, 25 hogs and-- n Score or more entry is sheepi and while the not certain, members will take to about 130 head of livestock North Salt Lake. - - Coming In for Its share of the 4-- 4-- Future Farmers from the Sponsors Listed Naturally, a livestock exhibit and sale of such magnitude requires a great deal of planning and spade work It requires sponsors who know the ropes of showing and marketing . . . sponsors who know how to handle voung folks. Such are the sponsors of the Intermountain; The Salt Lake chamber of Commerce, e and Davis and the State of Utah. Then there must be added scores of business and professional men, vocacattlemen, county agents, tional agriculture teachers, Club leaders and parents who are interested In seeing the youngster get a good start in the livestock business . . . seeing that they learn the ropes the right way and with livestock that meets the eyes of the men who pay for the animals at the auction. Raymond C. Wilson, president of the show, has gathered around him a mighty efficient .staff comprised of men with long experience in their particular fields. As hls Immediate aides he has J. Rube Larsen, vice president, a prominent livestock man, and J.
