Show Plea for High School Bonds by byC Civic C ivic Committee of W omens Clubs Editor Deseret News It does seem scorn ns as though the time had como come when nil right minded citizens ot of Salt Lake CIl City should put aside personal section sectional al ah political and religious differences In this matter of oC the tho school bond clec tion which Involves the tho vital Intel ests of the tho city In that It Concerns concern steeply the tho educational life and drivel doyel of oC the community For years the needs or of better belter school accommodations especially those ot of the High school school have been pressing hut but now we have actual actually come corne to time tho point when the board or of education must say to the tho citizens of oC Salt Lake We Vo must have more buildings wo we must have more mora room or wo we cannot give to 10 our children the thc schooling which you demand for Cor them and which they should have and deserve It if we nrc to pose before the country as a body of at citizens Just supposing that we a as a close corporation might keep Quiet as to weaknesses and our failings what should wo we have havo to say MY to those from other parts part of the tho country who eimo are aro desirous of oC locating here when the they ask What hat about the schools Have Havo you ou good and adequate school accommodations It we should tell them toe the truth we should be compelled to SlY say In to that question No wo we cannot guarantee to you ou ire ac accommodations we have hac good business opportunities wo we have a fine Inel nd beautiful elt city and all that but we are short on school facilities That I say would be a statement or of fact Then think of what that would mean for tor us Wo We all know knots what It would mean and I steed need not speak of oC It But eliminate the matter of oC tion entirely Let us suppose that we decree for tor ourselves such an Impossible sible and suicidal policy as to build a wall about our city and keep keel out all corners comers We Ve arc up against the lem of at providing for tor even the tho natural Increase of oC our own population To 10 demonstrate for Cor the tho high school alone In 1900 1500 we had enrolled pupils In 1910 there were wele 1566 Just think of oC that percentage of oC Increase Has the population ot of our city Increased In like proportion Assuredly not What then has been tIle the cause It Is this namely that the people of our city In common with those these ot of other cities have come more and aud more to recognize and believe In the public high school M as time tho proper place for the higher edu education education cation or of their children The rhe school In the tho of at Its buildings has certainly not up ap appealed pealed to thorn them The equipment time tho best we could o offer 1 has always been meager so that was not an Inducement There Thoro Is one and but one deduction to tobe tobe be made from Crom these premises and that thatis is 18 that there Is something In the pub public lie lic high school that appeals to us This something Is perhaps hard to define but there Is IA ono one thing In this connection that may bo be said The training given by the school Is now recognized by all leading educational Institutions such as aim universities and technical schools as being of at a very high character so 60 that our graduates or those recommended recommended mended by the principal have no difficulty culty In being admitted Into these In with the result that we have our sons and daughters as the stron strong factor In tho thia University ot of Utah while the school Is also represented by sterling students In Harvard Yale Princeton Cornell Wel Vel lesley baby Smith Stanford Berkeley and many other othor colleges Do De Despite spite untoward conditions therefore the standard ot of scholarship has always i been kept In the tho foreground But let letus letus us com come back to the main question We I know that the attendance at our high I has Increased and we have seen why this increase ha has taken place We are proud of at this showing and I think we want It to con continue continue But here bore wo we are Thery toot foot or of I space In the main the Science building the G Gymnasium and the Union building Is now being used and even now there if is not room for tOr the tho chases Every time that there Is a movement of classes our boys bos and girls gina have to move rapidly from Crom one to two between betseen buildings In all kinds of oC slush mud and amid snow The eternal of oC stairs und and other Inconveniences too numerous to men mention mention tion come after aCtor tho they have reached time tIle buildings I shall not speak ot of the uneconomic and the tho unhygienic condi conditions conditions Incident to this dally daily routine It If you wish to know everything ask your our sons cons and daughters who are In attend attendance attendance ance Suffice It to say that conditions are bad bad bad and we must get getright et right to work to correct them themI I have said that the present enroll enrollment mont ment Is 1566 The Increase this year over last year Is Have we any rca son to expect that next years Increase will be less than this Or that of time the succeeding year less ess than the Ing If H we have not then In two years time we shall have an of or a total ot of 1102 10 Where arc they to togo togo go Is absolutely no place for them And yet et the board of education will be compelled to furnish teach erg rs and a place to teach this in increased n creased number If H the tho bonds are not voted time the board will still ha have to provide accommodation How Io will this be done By renting some old shacks In different parts palts ot of the city and fitting theto up imp tor or school chool purposes or b by building on time tho high school grounds temporary structures till the people realize tull the situation and come forward with the proper support to provide for Cr a good new high school There rhe e are arc absolutely the only tives For we cannot turn away chil iren dren who come to us for Cor schooling We Ve cannot M say to them Go to some other school we have no room for you ou Every citizen cnn can demand for Cor his child U a high school e education and that do de demand mind mand must be satisfied Nor can we SO say We mn may use sons ot of the grade schools for tor the purposes of high school work For the tho grades are now full rull to overflowing or Of the asked for tor Is to be U used 1 tot fOI the high school and the remain Ing to build much needed grad 1 schools These schools are almost ns as badly off IlS as the high school on account of at Inadequate accommodations The Tho charges brought against th board of education as being corrupt are utterly without foundation and should not influence any man with sense The board as a whole Is on onor ona or of the strongest most conscientious and most conservative that has ov ever r been In office The rhe charges made against two members that they were guilty of questionable business trans transactions transactions actions have not the slightest basis basi tf It proof and are nothing less than libel bus lous J I make this declaration from a J knowledge ot or the circumstances con connected with time the charges anti and also ulso rota the direct statement of the parties In involved In them Without hesitancy I sa say that the present school hool board can enn safely be entrusted with sith the money to use It to the best advantage e So fellow tellow citizens you ou can see aee that the board of at education Is up imp It and they are simply asking you OU the ones who are most closely Interest Interested ed In these matters matter to sa say what you OU will uli do Do you ou want this condition of oC things to go 10 on or will you register your vote as Intelligent broadminded d citizens to say MY Enough of this let Itt letus us have hao our schools provided for Cor urd properly equipped Our children their health and nd their education are arc to us than paved streets or sidewalks sidewalk We Ve vote for tor the school bonds CIVIC
