The 2000-folift, which was physically possible In any one of several ways, would be far too costly at least under any procedures so far discovered by engineering scienceto permit construction on an economically sound basis. To this extent the early opponents of the project appear to have been quite sound in their arguments. The Central Utah Project Itself, however, was central Utah had to cross a large mountain barrier. The original plan project called for a 2000-folift to get over this barrier and on this point a heated controversy raged for years. Proponents claimed that such a lift Was quite possible; opponents insisted that it was not at all feasible and was only a concluded that the Central dream which could never become a reality. Mo- hammed. Mohammed neither flew into a tantrum of rage at the uncooperative mound of rock and earth nor sulked and refused to have anything more to do with it. Instead he took the simple. practical solution and went to the mountain. The old proverb has frequent parallels in the field of modern engineering.. The moving of mountains, orNit least the obstructing portions of them. has. become a matter of routine in this mechanzed age, but the problem of the high cost of such an operation has never been done away'with. Something which is physically possible. may often be tom- pletely impractical if the ecost is out of proportion to the benefits to be derived. When the Central Utah Prolect was first pro- posed. it was such a stumbling block which stood. in the way of turning the proposal into reality. No matter how - the engineers studied maps and sure veyed terratn, they could not get around the fact that any route from potential dam sites on the Colo- rado or its major tributaries ,to Bonneville Basin in NEWS MAGAZINE 16 Mt, Mall' , .., , , , ..,......00"-- . - .. r.,-- , 7 .,-..- .mmoloorwrol , d4,deS. .. 10.- . . 7 , , c - - .. .., - ' - ., - , , ,,,, , - '- I. r - ..., ' '' v' - r - , .,, - , .',-..--- .1 . , .. , I 16 ., ,, , - ' Lome Ridge dry form' 'lends , -:- - . ,., Awooft....,...inor.et nor Nepldi irrigebk trader Cootral Utah Prolct . .
