The train twitched around the curve, with the Echo sidings plain in sight at the foot of the grade. vetyr-heels,,-Ba- ct- . crashing that sounded through the din of whistle and grinding wheels announced the end. The pursuing tail was into the curve. It struck a tie, apparently, for off the track it lurched, to go tumbling and rolling and spilling its ties and iron, down the slope from the roadbed, clear -the canyon's bottom and the shallow creek there. With brakes screaming and released steam spouting and whistle signaling its arrival the train made Echo City and a readied siding. A crowd Paddy and the trainmen babbled explanation. "Two men in the wreck, you say?" "There they be, along with the ties an' iron." . "A double funeral. Let's fetch . 'em. in, boys." The salvage crew trooped for the wreck, with blanket litters and with eyes curious to view the scene. There were the tumbled earl; two of them with wheels up like iinplor- ing paws; there was the jackstraw clutter of ties and iron; and there were the two Dutchmen, somewhat disheveled, sitting upon the creek bank, in he midst of ,the wreckage, blinking about. and rubbing their headsalive and able, with not even a bloody nose! --' - They had been 'asleep all during the:race., snugly bedded:between stacks et ties on their flat; and had waked up only when pitched out i upon the creek bank after the nights mare flight through the stormy air, ; "Faith," said Paddy, "wid thim bard hides they could be Irish, excipt for lack o' brains!" to--- 1., - " pace, and of the two Dutchmen there was no sign. Deaf and blind they were, or else paralyzed stiff. All the gorge echoed to the roar and to the whistle sounding the ,' alarm and claiming a clear track ahead. On before was the depot at Echo City with its sidings. If the train could get there with leeway enough it might pass on, and a quickly turned switch would shunt the pursuit into a dead-en- d siding, for a smashup.- The whistle would have notified' Echo of trouble, and have readied it for action. But what with the way that tail was closing in, and what with Echo still several naeposts away, the chance nf a clearance there looked dubious': Pabby grabbed at an idea. "Off with, the ties!" he bawled. the track wid 'em! We'll de"Onto ' i rail them crazy Bate The word carried. Off went the ties (in value $7 apiece) from the rear flat, as fast as men could handle them. More ties were hustled back. The heavy squared timbers bounced and .twirlserhither and thither; the train left a wake of jetsam, but at every glimpse the pursuit kept to the trail. Space narrowed. 'Echo City was around the next curve, which opened for the final downgrade.
