If the istory-tellin- g is lost, then it's merely story ia record, a series of animated snapshots. To an unfamiliar i!audience, such snapshots are : t without rhyme or reason. The motion picture tells its ' story through a series of lclosely related actions or ' events. l It never has scenes Zwhich are long, boresome or !static. It is composed of elei ments which are known as the shot, the scene, and the : .sequence. t 1 The shot presents a single t iaction from a single distance 1 and angle; the scene presents ! :the continuing action, but is i Icomprised of shots which tell $ , the story of that single incizklent. As in trie writing of a story, the final product i s produced by discriminating choice of what has been done in the first place. A suggestion is that you edit your film three or four times. The first time, slash away like mad, discarding elements which d onota to the story itself. The remaining editing may discard more yet, and, again, before yOu're through, you may be adding a few feet of discarded material to make the story smooth and coherent.
