Maybe the kids don't have to put out quite so much as we did in "the good old days." Comparison is a funny thing when it's done in two separate periods of time. We can remember the burning lungs that always came after the sixth or eighth windsprint Can't forget the extreme wearinessthe kind that numbs youafter a hefty scrimmege session. Neither can you forget the shock that hits you when you first comprehend that there's something out of kilter, when you see a limp, grostesque Arm laying there, realize it is yours from a shoulder dislocation. There were nights, plenty of them, when sleep just wouldn't come. , The leg cramps came so frequently if you didn't change position that sleep was impossible. Anbther nightovell remembered, was spent sitting upright because a set of broken ribs hadn't really begun to hurt until too late to have them properly cared for. We can remember, too, the taste of blood that came from a battered usifa-or a lecerated lip. The smell of alcohol in the merthinlate and the sharp bite of the stuff as it coursed over a raw shin are prominent in the memory. Adhesive tapeyards of itthat kept your ankles hairless for months at a time, and the sticky benzine solution that went under it associate themselves prominently with the football mind. Sure It Was Fun It was fun. Sure it was fun on Saturday afternoons when you put on the finery, when you went out to "do your stuff" before thousands of people. You didn't even mind.so much after the game, though you knew that the bruises and bumps would be twice as sore on Sunday. Maybe it's different now. Maybe the breed has changed. Maybe they don't'put their heart and soul into it like we'did 15 years ago. Maybe the game's changed to the point that it isn't necessary to incur the bumps and bruises, that it isn't necessary to work 'so hard to make the grade in your own eyes as well as those of your teammates. ' Maybe the "specialists" of today don't have to burn their lungs out to get ready for the big game on Saturdays. Frankly, we don't know. We doubt that its changed much. We imagine the unnatural feeling of bruised or broken flesh is still the same. We imagine the kids of today get just as many leg cramps. We imagine that just as many of them groan and creak to their homes at night and fall into bed in utter fatigue. 1 ;: ' ' .., .
