(AP) The French government announced today a plan which would virtually subsidize the French motion picture Industry in competition with foreign films. The government Issued a cree banning the showing de- -' of which were exhibited in France before October, 1937, with the excepUon of a few of unusual merit or educational Inany-fil- terest Both measures were undertaken to build up the French movie Industry which has been badly hit by the war, particularly because of a shortage of raw film (Only a few French pictures have been made since the armistice and they have been heavily laden with propaganda for the Vichy government and its theories. Most of the theaters In the German occupied zone show films dubbed in French. Few German films have gone to the unoccupied zone. (Several French cinema stars are In Hollywood and others have expressed the hope they could go, saying that the Industry was at least temporarily finished in France). The new law authorized the state to advance up to 65 per cent of the total cost of the projected film, the remainder" to be assumed by the producer. The statute increased 'state control of French film production, which was already under supervision since actors, could -play only a government identity card.
