| Show LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS STRONG ARGUMENT IN THEIR FAVOR superintendent of utah county gives statistics showing how they advance education conclusions applicable to sevier county richfield nich field L E eggersten Egger sien ot of schools of utah county gives the following interesting information in regard to the high schools of that county and his c conclusions are applicable to the high schools of sevier county statistics from the six towns in utah 11 county where high schools have been 60 established show the following com karlsons parl sons twelve per cent of the eighth grade graduates before the schools were started left home to to go to school elsewhere eighty eight per cent did not go to school a at all alli since the high schools have started eighty per cent of the eighth grade graduates lat attended tended the local high schools and of those who completed the two years courses fifty per cent left home to finish their courses in 1 some university the reason for this is plain viz few homes are financially able to send a son or daughter away to school for more than one or two years ind and that does not prepare them sufficiently for higher work but with two or three years at home and are able to graduate in sonic some line and take bold of the work being prepared for it the high school movement is being strongly supported by the university of let utah and by the B Y Y Uni university universe versi ty at other institutions the credits are accepted the he essential courses offered are the same the university of utah has issued a high school circular endorsed by state supt bupt A C nelson in which the subjects are outlined and the hours credit given for each subject completed this was adopted at our county high school meeting july A few reasons are here given for OT the local high school first it makes it possible for pupils to go later to the university and complete some curses Zur courses ses A second eighth grade students students are too young to leave their parental home third it encourages eighty per cent to go olgher in educational pursuits fourth it creates created an educational spirit at home so much that many go to flo school for they feel the influence of a companion that is going where he knows he can and may go fifth the high school pupils may give educational evenings at home which will develop their talents arid and the same may be witnessed by father mother and friends sixth it will greatly increase the moral tone of the town seventh it will throw down the barriers between those financially able to educate their children and those who are not the widows boy Is therefore not de barred from getting higher education while he is yet young I 1 i I 1 I 1 eighth it Is to embrace in the course of baudy elementary agriculture so that our chief industry may bel studied led theoretically and practically ninth it is not to educate boys and girl girls s for off but rather for them to love work of any honorable kind to be prepared for opportunities tuni ties arid and to be a better and more useful citizen tenth As we have had but a limited number of local high schools only the favored few have been able to obtain the necessary higher education eleventh it adds strength to the lower grades and enthuses the c hil chil dren there to become high school pupils pils the question of the support of our high schools is an important one and while each high school district has levied a special tax lor for its support ort it is ray my belief that state aid 0 may be secured it the legislature will properly consider the question there Is at least spent for high school work in our state institutions which if distributed to our local high schools would be a material aid and then our university and agricultural college would be able to devote their energies to college work the university of utah has edmi bated the first year of the high school zil and lid will soon do so with the second 3 lear ear the agricultural college can do the same and the appropriations going to these institutions for high school purposes can be used among the people where the high school pupils will number this year 1306 1906 one thousand as compared with three or I 1 four hundred who attend the state institutions the local high school belongs to every country boy and girl it should be near him so that he may attend it some children rill still desire to attend school away from home parents may desire it also and question in many ways the staying home proposition but it stands to reason and experience peri ence that good will be accomplished to the greater number by the establishment of high schools not only to 0 o the universities but to every practical pursuit |
