By LUCILLE RIVERS Often skirt and bodice adjustments are related and must be made after the skirt is joined to the waist. Follow these instructions: MATCHING BODIcfc AND SKIBT DARTS The darts toward the center on the front and back bodice should always form a continuous line. This is why the darts should be taken in or let out only on the outside line. FITTING FOB THE be ! slashed from, the hem to the waist about 4 inches in from the Bide seam. Spread the muslin the amount needed for the correct hip size and pin a piece of fabric here to hold (Illustration 4). To adjust 'the pattern, add the same amount at the side seam (Illustration 5). The amount spread at the fullest part of the hip should 'be the same as at the hemline. To remove the extra flare, pin a dart across the side skirt at the fullest part of the hip. Taper the dart from nothing at the side seam toward the slash to shape the skirt Make the same adjustment In the pattern (Illustration 6) as on the muslin. T4-- " HIP When the waist and hip are INCREASING THE both smaller than the pattern, SKIBT WAISTLINE The skirt waist size is Ina tuck can be taken the whole creased by adding at the side of and the muslin, length folded into the pattern at the seam of the muslin or pattern SMALL same point (Illustrations I (Illustrations 7 and 8). The skirt is never slashed to adjust and 2). When nly the hips are smaller and need adjusting, fit out the excess fullness at the side seam of the muslin. You can fold this same amount off the pattern before it is cut, or you qan fit it out and leave it in the seam of the finished a. garment. If the front or back of the ' 'v . skirt has a puff below the darts that cant be fitted out, the darts are too deep, giving more shaping than is needed. Refit the darts, making them smaller by letting out on the outside line of the dart. Remove the excess from the waist and hip size by taking a tuck the length of the muslin. Correct the pat-ter- n in the same way (Illustration 3). Generally, this adjustment is needed only in the back, except when the stomach is also flat. In that case, further adjustment will be necessary. Decreasing the skirt waistline Increasing the skirl waistline FITTING THE SKIBT Often, in sewing, skirt adjustments must be made after the skirt is Joined to the valst. Follow the illustrations above and read the accompanying article to learn the professional way of fitting skirts. Keeping Posted How Is Thank You Note Addressed? By EMILY POST Dear Mrs. Post: I have just finished writing thank you notes for my wedding presents. I addressed the notes to Mrs. alone. I understand that several relatives and friends are hurt because I did not address the notes to Mr. and Mrs. and feel that their husbands have been slighted. Will you please tell me if I was wrong? Answer: If in your notes you thanked them both for the love- until she marries. Emily Pott Initiate It ly present they sent you, you It The cannot answer personal sorry mail. FITTING FOB THE FULL HIP When the hips are wider than the pattern size, let out the seams of your muslin and when cutting your dress, add the necessary amount at the same places. If a large amount has to be added at the hip and not at the waist, the muslin can were not wrong. Dear Mrs. Post: Is it proper, after a girl has become engaged, to call her fiances parents Mother and Dad, or does she continue to call them Mr. and Mrs. until after she is the waist size, as is sometimes done to alter the bodice waistline (Illustration 9). Increase the skirt waist size by the same amount and at the same point as the bodice waistline was increased: that is, on the front skirt piece only, on the back skirt piece only, or on both front and back pieces. DECREASING THE SKIBT WAISTLINE To decrease waist size, fold a dart from the waistline toward the hip. Alter the skirt the same amount as the bodice (Illustrations 10 and 11). If the waist is very small in proportion to the hips, alter the skirt back waist by making fitting darts slightly deeper. Adjust the darts only on the side toward the side seam, never on the side toward the center back (Illustration 12). Do not make the skirt front fitting darts deeper, except when fitting for large pelvic bones. 'r-- v 'V BETROTHED Miss Joan Howell is engaged to Norman Wood. They plan an early fall wedding.
