V M Sntads Golf School TR0Ui::5 W ' ? Fcol Posilions Give Slice, Hoc!! Tola! Valua ' SXEAD There are three basic golf stances the open stance, the closed stance and the square stance (today's drawing shows first two). In the open stance, the left foot is drawn back a bit from the intended line of flight This helps produce a slicing or fading shot to the right The right foot Is drawn hack a bit in the closed stance, and this will give you a shot that hooks a hit to the left The more pronounced the open or closed stance, the more pronounced will be the slice or the hook. You may wonder why anyone would w ant to deliberately hook or slice a shot, but there are times when an obstruction makes It impossible to hit a straight shot to your target On dogleg holes, too, you would need such shots. For standard, straight full wood shots, I prefer a slightly closed stance that is pretty close to being square. I think most golfers should begin with a square stance (both feet " exactly parallel! and work from that point to see what works best for them. For me, the slightly closed stance gives my ball just a whisper of a hook, and it puts overspin on the ball so it will roll a bit farther for me. I have no trouble controlling It, either.
