Show University West Stake Gains New Counselor Bishop Milton G. Thackeray of the Eleventh Ward, Sunday was sustained as the new second counselor to President Lemonte Peterson of the University West Stake. He succeeds President Boyd C. Bronson who has moved from the stake. President Merrill J. Wood is the first counselor in the stake presidency. President Thackeray who has been bishop of the Eleventh Ward since 1956 is associate professor of social work at the University of Utah. He was assistant director of the Childrens Service Society, Salt , and has Lake City, President Dennis Livesey of England's fourth stake, Leeds, with counselors Raymond C. Bustin, left and Alvin I. Holton. 1947-48- LEEDS STAKE CRE ATED IN ENGLAND ENGLAND The new Leeds Stake, 327th in the Church, and the fourth to be created in England during the past )ear, was formed here Sundn through a division of the Manchester Stake and two new wards taken from the Sheffield District of the North British Mission. The Manchester Stake continues with seven wards and seven branches with three of the new wards taken from the Preston District also of the North British Mission. President Dennis Liveey, formerly first counselor in the Manchester Stake, was sustained as president of the new Leeds Stake. His counselors are Raymond C. Bustin, who has been president of the Sheffield Distiict sinee last June, and Alvin I. Holton, formerly of the Sheffield district presidency. Teiry Howard Sirth was named stake cleik and Leslie Aliock, assistant. Robot G. Larsen remains as president of the Manchester Stake William Bates, formerly second counselor, was sustained as new first counselor, succeeding Piesident Livesey, and James J. R. Caddiek, formerly senior member of the high council is the new second counselor. The largest crowd of members to assemble in Manchester since July 6, 1840, witnessed the organization of the l ew stake under the direction f Elder Hugh B. Brown of ihe Council of the Twelve and Elder Nathan E. Tanner, Assistant to the Council of the Twelve. It was reported 2,088 Iversons attended the morning conference session in the Palace Theater. President Thackeray is a graduate of the U. of U. where he received his master's degree in 1941 and his MSSA from Western Reserve Uni- versity in 1948. He was born at Croydon, Milton G. Thackeray . . . second counselor Moran County, a son of Howard Alma and Fannie Grover Thackeray. He married Earol Hassell of Salt Lake City in the Salt Lake Temple. They have five sons and daughters. 1000 members witness organization of Holland Stake ROTTERDAM HOLLAND-O- ne thousand members and fi lends witnessed the organization of the first stake on the here European Continent March 12 as the Holland Stake was formed fiom Nethei lands Mission. Paul Jongkees, fiist counselor in the mission presidency, and a native of Den Holder, was sustained as the fust piesident of the stake Sustained as his counselors were two natives of Indonesia, Bernard W. Leftandt who was born at Buitenzorg and Gerard G. Stoove of Djokjakar ta. President LeFrandt had been YMMIA supervisor for the mission while President Stoove the past year presided over the Rotterdam District. Cornells van der Put was sustained as stake clerk. The formation of the first foreign speaking stake of the Church was effected under the direction of Elder Hugh R, Brown of the Council of the Twelve assisted by Elders Alvin R. Dyer, Nathan E. Tanner, Assistants to the Council of the Twelve. The stake high council consists of Thys Winkel, Louis C. Frolich, Hendrikus H. Meyer, Willem J. Paaij, Lambertus Kuipers, Evert Koning, James J. De Bry and Adrianus Van Dam. Speakers in the priesthood session were the General Authorities, Elder Wendell B. Mendenhall, chairman of the Church Building Committee, and President Volker. The new stake has five wards plus an independent branch at Delft and dependent branches at Leiden, Schiedam and Vlaardingen. Bishops susn tained were Johannes C. of the Amsterdam East Ward; Marinus Stade, Amsterdam West Ward; Henri Caster, The Hague Ward; Christiaan Heu-perma- North Ward; Pieter Speerstia, Rotterdam South Ward. President Jongkees is 41 years of age. He mariied D. Sigmond, Rotterdam Gwendoline R. Bassett of St. Austell, England, in 1949 in England. They have two children. He Is a graduate of the Naval College as a communication officer. His Church activities have Included branch Sunday School followed by superintendent, branch clerk assignment, pres- - ident of the Leiden Branch and first counselor in the mission presidency prior to his new appointment. President LeFrandt mariied Nora Louis Augustine Simons of Pontianak, Indonesia. They have a son and a daughter living at Montebello, Calif.; and two sons at home. He completed schooling in Indonesia and graduated also from the Military College at Colombo. He served as a custom house officer and since 1941 has been a naval officer presently holding the rank of lieutenant commander. During World War II he was cited for bravery as a "Ranger in the parachute division. Jongkees of Holland Stake accepting his new assignment as General Authorities and their wives and Mission President Volker participated in stake formation. He also earlier served as president of The Hague Branch. President Stoove has four sons and daughters. He married Mary Colette Fournier of Soekaboemi, Indonesia. He is continuing his educational studies at the University of Rotterdam. He has served as a Sunday School teacher, president of the Rotterdam North Branch, where he previously was first counselor in the presidency and earlier branch clerk. |
