This is for anyone who works at Westminster that wants to show up and play Staff Reporter Westminster leaders are growing as a team, literally. Faculty and staff bond over a little fun on the basketball court. Thursdays at noon, any faculty and staff members of Westminster College are invited to shoot a few hoops in Payne Gymnasium. This is something that happens on and off every few years, and this year we decided to try to make it happen again, said Traci Siriprathane, director of fitness, wellness and recreation. Its just a matter of getting the word out to faculty and staff to come play Noon Hoops. Norm Parrish Hoops in Payne some ball. This is a pretty casual and informal group, said Mark Feme, dean of students. Last week, we had seven people and this week we have eight. Siriprathane and Feme agree that Noon Hoops is a great way for faculty and staff of Westminster to reach out and get to know each other. It builds teamwork and it gives you a chance to meet other people that you might not work with on campus, Siriprathane said. Students are taught a set of college-wid- e learning goals during their career at Westminster, three of which are leadership, collaboration and teamwork. Feme said faculty and staff strive to set examples of those goals for their students. I never knew they were bonding outside of the classroom, said Ashleigh Pulpisher, alumna (T5). I did, however, have one teacher who threw a family party. The professor wasnt bonding with other educators, but she was creating a safe and fun learning environment for her students. As influential members of the community at Westminster, this is just one way faculty and staff are guiding students. Noon Hoops takes place Thursdays at noon in Payne Gym. All faculty and staff are invited to show up ready to have a good time. to lead mens basketball team Z Brittany Punjab) Staff Re potter i c i ry n Norm Parrish has been named the new head coach for the Griffin mens basketball team, after former coach Adam Hiatt stepped down in July. Shay Wyatt, director of athletics, and the rest of the athletics department welcomed Parrish as he takes his role as head basketball coach. Wyatt said he is confident Parrish will be of great benefit as Westminster goes through the NCAA Division II membership application process. Parrishs experience and prior success will benefit our mens basketball and position them for success in this transition, Wyatt said. Parrish met the team for the first time at practice on Wednesday, Aug. 26. He said he has tried to develop teams that play hard, are disciplined and are ones to beat. He said he wants Westminsters team to play tough and play together. They seem like a great bunch of young men, and Im looking forward to becoming a part of the Westminster community, Parrish 6 said. Westminster was an elite school in the Frontier League, and Parrish said he hopes the school will move to a point where it is one of the elites in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Association. Were going to play really hard, Parrish said. Theres no reason for the opponent to play harder than we do. Jordan Pryor, senior management major and Westminster basketball team member, said balance is what makes a good coach. He has to be able to be in touch with his players on a personal level, Pryor said. But when hes on the floor, he knows its about business. Pryor recently met Parrish at their first practice of the season. He seems like he knows the game, Pryor said. He knows how to coach his players. Parrish said he wants Westminster to be proud of its mens basketball team, much in agreement with Director of Athletics Shay Wyatt. The goal for the college and our department is to attain and sustain quality, competitive programs, which benefit the college and further enhance the educational experience for and overall student body, our student-athletes Wyatt said. As the 2015-20- 16 season kicks off, Parrish strives to help the schools mens basketball team continue to represent Westminster well, while transitioning into NCAA Division II.
