Show THE FORUM - AUGUST 16, 3 2013 l Meet The Forum staff Whatever your quirks or misgivings, you'll probably fit right in. B Hillary Fowler Managing Editor C IS3 G3 0) Q. 5 r o E CD I remember what it was like coming in as a freshman: worrying about fitting in with the right people, looking for ways to get involved and basically just trying to get off on the right foot in every way. Being lost like any new college student, I stumbled down the mysterious stairs into the dungeon, also known as the basement of Shaw, and happened to end up in the weird office hiding over in the corner where the newspaper junkies hang out. No cell service, random banners, questionable refrigerators and the greatest group of people, scaring me at first, ended up changing my entire college experience for the better. Starting college is a scary, experience; you find out who you are and become a different person. Some life-chang- 2 ing times it is hard to choose tween being who you think you are, finding out who you should be and trying to make new friends. Crux constellation is the smallest of the 88 modern constellations, but one of the most distinctive. When I think of this, I think of my time at Westminster and how I have grown into the person I am today. As a freshman, you probably feel a bit lost and maybe even unsure of where you belong. Remember even though you are small, you are here for a reason; you are distinctive and in time that will begin to show. With every experience and challenge you encounter, you will begin to see more of who you are meant to be. Let the distinctiveness shine through and become your own small star that shines brighter than be- O O the rest. Being a part of The Forum has made me a better writer, friend, leader, student and person in general. Yes, the quirkiness might rub off on you and you may end up being sucked into the cave for four years, but you should hope you are that lucky. The more quirks you have, the better you will fit right in. Instead of hiding in your tiny, concrete dorm room, staring at the random new person you are being forced to live with, wondering if they look like the type of person who will draw weird faces on you in the middle of the night, make your way down to the basement of Shaw and meet The Forum staff. Make sure to start the next four years of your life off on the right foot and begin the most defining time of your life. Arriving at Westminster Getting past the fear that comes with starting college Kira Jefferson r I Contributing Writer ( p tV Start packing for a new ad- venture. Every freshman in the past few weeks has done this. For years we have been waiting for this moment, the moment of going out on our own for the very first time. Though now that the time is here, it is terrifying but exciting. It is an opportunity to find out more about ourselves and gain a better understanding of the world. One thing that most of us do not think about, however, is being homesick. Believe me it will happen. Leaving sunny Southern California and heading to Utah is definitely going to be an adjustment. I am so excited to be coming to Westminster; I can already picture doors opening and internships coming my way. However, the same prospect scares me beyond my wildest imagination. There is one quote by Marianne Williamson that I find particularly true, Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate; our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, talented, gorgeous and fabulous? Actually who are you not to be? Youre playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are meant to shine and we do. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. I cannot wait to see what we all do this year. Be someone to be proud of. Most of all, enjoy every day being you because frankly, that is what life is all about. i ( j t t 1 |
