Writers of many different backgrounds come to Westminster to read their works for the community. Each series features a different lineup of artists. Poetry is an art that changes how you feel, said Natasha Saje, an English professor and organizer of the event. It does it through a combination of song and performance. Its not like any other performance, she said. Its like you are in- gesting some sort of exotic food that your body has to learn to process. This is Saje s fourteenth year working with the poetry series. Because its art, its not like someone is lecturing at you, Saje said. Its really fun, I think. Funding for the series comes from the Anne Newman Sutton Weeks endowment. The endowment is $450,000, and the interest from that amount funds the series. Saje also writes a grant to the Zoo, Arts, and Parks program every year, and is awarded anywhere from five to eight thousand dollars for the series. Many poets are selected to present their works to the series audience. Editor-In-Chi- One criterion is that the person has never read in the series before, said Saje. Poets for the series are chosen to be able to showcase a variety of styles With the goal to expand mines October is National Book Month, and to celebrate the Utah Humanities Council holds a free, statewide book festival. Created over 15 years ago, this festival is the oldest and only book festival in Utah. Festivities began Sept. 22 and ends on Oct. 31. The festival features local as well as nationally renowned authors. throughout the year. The next writer to be featured is Ana Castillo, a novelist, poet, essayist and playwright. She has taught at such institutions as MIT, Mt. Holyoke, and the University of California at Santa Barbara. She also teaches el upper-levEnglish courses at Westminster. In addition to her many npvels, she has also written columns and essays on topics ranging from the murder of singer Selena to gender roles in the farmworkers movement. Castillo has received awards and accolades from the Before Columbus Foundation and the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum in Chicago. The reading will be held at The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art on Oct. 19th from 7 p.m. to 8:30pm. The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 20S West Temple.
