The Center for Civic Engagement is sponsoring the annual Hunger Banquet, an event designed to raise awareness about hunger issues. At the event, attendees will draw cards that will determine class for the their evening. The meal you are served is based on your assigned class, and ranges from a small portion of rice and half portion of water to a full spread including every food group. Joey Cathcart and Lucy Daynes, students who work as volunteer coordinators at the Center for Civic socio-econom- security is having multiple signs of disrupted eating patterns and reduced food intake going hungry. The Utahns Against Hunger website says about 4.8 of Utahns are living in households with very low food security. Attending the Hunger Banquet will show these levels of food insecurities in a way that is more tangible than numbers on a page. Cathcart says people who attend the event can branch out and attempt to increase awareness of other peoples levels of income and how they eat. Laura Holtrop from Utahns Against Hunger will be attending the event this year. She says that even though the Hunger Banquet may not bring in a lot of monetary or donations, the event is - ic Engagement, are organizing the event. Cathcart says the event will help everyone who participates to get a better sense of how it feels to be in that position of not having enough food. Cathcart says that the purpose of the event is to help increase awareness of the difference in social class in regards to how people eat around the world. in-ki- nd an investment can awareness Increasing raise more money for a cause over someones lifetime, said Holtrop. Events like this are like higher ed- Daynes believes hunger issues are important. There is a huge inequality with the way food resources are spread out, said Daynes. The planet has enough food for everyone, its just not distributed in the right ways. Food inequality in not only a global issue, it affects our community at the local level. Local impact is one reason Cathcart and Daynes reached out to local nonprofits when planning their event. This year representatives from Utahns Against Hunger, Crossroads Urban Center and The Utah Food Bank will attend the event. The organizations will give presentations on how they combat hunger issues, and will lead discussions about food inequality. According to the Utahns Against Hunger website, 48.8 million people in the United States live in food insecure households. Utahs food insecurity rate is 13 percent, just below the national average. ucation, they are equipping people to help out in the future. Its really important for people to just know about it hunger issues, said Daynes. If people are thinking about it, they can come up with solutions, new solutions that could really change things. The Hunger Banquet will take place on Nov. 15 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in HWAC 206. Students are encouraged to attend and to bring donations of nonperishable food items. All food items donated will be distributed equally among Utahns Against Hunger, Utah Food Bank and Crossroads Urban Center, The event is free for all attendees. Donations are not required for attendance.
