Saje says Professor Natasha isnt describing anything remotely to do with food. Saje, an English professor at Westminster, is the director of the Anne Newman Sutton Weeks Poetry Series. Westminster Colleges 21st annual poetry series premieres Sept. 23rd in the Dumke Student Theatre. Poets Nancy Eimers and Shawn Fawson will begin reading at 7:00p.m. followed by a book signing sponsored by The Kings English Bookstore. The poetry series continues throughout the year with four events from September to April. This years poetry menu contains diversity in the poets as well as their poetry, said Saje who takes into account the aesthetics of the poetry and the background of the poet. The poets opening the series both have connections to the Vermont College of Fine Arts. One is a professor. The other, a previous student. g Eimers is the author of three collections of poetry and is awaiting the publication of another poetry collection titled Oz in spring 2011. Besides being an acclaimed poet, Eimers teaches creative writing at Western Michigan University and the Vermont College of Fine Arts. Fawson is the author of several pocket books and one poetry collection, award-winnin- full-leng- th One community member to continue to an MFA program is also one of the Giving Way. Fawson is a Salt Lake City native. She received her Masters of Fine Arts at the Vermont College of Fine Arts where she had Eimers as a professor. The combination is like a welcome to the poet community, said Saje. I enjoy seeing new faces at the readings and inviting new poets to Utah. Inviting new poets to Utah is one of the parameters Saje looks at while deciding who to invite to the series. Several of the poets will be visiting Utah for the first time. One poet, Jill McDonough, has been selected to lead a semester-lon- g seminar. free is McDonough teaching a poetry 10 from Jan. workshop through April 18. The workshop is open to the community and students. The goal is to help students and community members grow with the deep attention theyd receive from a professional, says Saje. Several students and community members who have participated in the seminar have gone on to MFA programs across the country. When youre around adults looking at the same things, you begin to wonder about the next place, opening poets. Fawson participated in the seminar a few years before enrolling in the Vermont College of Fine Arts. If youre writing, you want to said be exposed to other writers, Westminster senior Miranda Hingston. Hingston who plans to attend the poetry series said, we not only have the obligation, we have the pleasure to support these events. Were the only liberal arts college in Utah. We need to be doing liberal arts things. To bring poetry and an overall appreciation for written work to Westminster students, Saje and the Ellipsis staff are planning a poetry and prose slam. Students are invited to share the writing in an open environment. The event is tentatively set for late Oct. Saje would like students to gain a heightened interest in language by attending the series. Poetry is about here and now, says Saje. She also hopes students appreciate the personal relationship the poets bring to their work as they recite it. rTj ULi said Saje.
