Why are you qualified for the position of di e question on the editorship application. Here's my answer wimniWMinmnia Freshmen year. I was green to college and new to die communication major. I knew I wanted something to do with writing and nothing to do with math. My options were eitha comm, or English. I sent a poorly, grammatically incorrect, retrospectively horrendous letter to the editor of The Forum asking if I could write for die paper. She said didnt think I was it and even entertaining slowly piecing together a shattered confidence in my writing My stories were being published and I wasnt the worst writer in the class like I had anticipated Med one Im those I stories of learned Med in ten However, proud how to write the good TS. Eliot said I suppose some editors are Med writers; but so are most writers. I couldnt believe this yes. However, five semesters passed before I wrote my fist article. the advisor and the newly appointed editor ofThe Forum. We arranged a deal whereby I would be the assistant editor for the semester. I was spring 2009. I was fulfilling the for the Commutation major. I was requirements scared I was intimidated by the thought of having to write for The Forum I heard intimidating stories about the student run papa which made me cringe At the time I thought I had already taken die hardest comm, class; Writing for the Mass Media and I almost foiled. I remember sitting in the teachers office as he lectured me on the art of writing. He said Registration major. I didnt After all, its they said you shouldnt asked him questions and wrote what he said I acted ' like I knew what I was doing Several days later, my name was in the story and pictures followed What a feeling I couldnt contain myself I had to tdl people my family I had become a published by-lin-e; writer. My second article was published on the front page: I had no idea why. I asked the editor why, and he said he reserved that space for the article he thought represented die entire issue welL I had an idea of what front page news was, but I ;; vd, to prove to myself (and to a few others) I could write well and with conviction I talked with t J ; I have two goals to accomplish while working for the Forum this year. One, I want to get more people involved in, and reading The Forum. Secondly, I would like to see The Forum put up for an award from anywhere, for anyone, because of anything These goals are lofty and are going to take hard f I wrote, people soff compliments. My writing had been wdl received I couldnt, and cant, believe nor understand why. I was asked to talk to a dass about profile writing,. Word got to me the editor of a national, publication enjoyed an article I had written. the comments helped boost my confidence, but yhat was really exciting to me was that people work Opposed to taking one large left turn, we plan on making several shorter right hand turns Instead of cruising the highway, wel be touring the frontage road Were goingtomakeU-tum- s along ourjourney and Im certain youll find us back pedaling But no . - ; - matter which direction we choose to go, I want you by our side. Open critique of the student run publication is essential. Ifyou dont have anything nice to say, say it were taking my work seriously, and not to mention, reading it in the first plaice. Had they known Jiow many times I Med they might hold their opinions m a different light I have Med many times as a writer, and through those Mures, I have been allowed to see what I have done wrong and because of those experiences, am that much stronger 1 i Four years ago, sitting in my dorm room, typing a letter to the editor, I never thought about applying for the editorship. But here I am, sitting at the editor s desk, putting together my first issue. I want people to respect my work. I want people to respect The Forum. I want readers to read what writers want to write. I want our work to be educational, informative l will anyway. . And if you have nice things to say, well listen. As with most endeavors whereyouput your workon the line, you havetohandle criticism well, but you haveto handle compliments even better. We wil And The Forum will grow stronger from your feedback I want readers to read what writers want to write. If you have story ideas we want them. If you have stunning photographs we want them. I was slated to write a profile on one of die Mr. Westminster candidates. How would I write a profile?
