On campus there are many opportunities for students to help each other within the Westminster community. Outside of Westminster, there are even more chances around Sugar House and Salt Lake to help out by donating time or money. it organizations rely on volunteers to help out in any way they can. Junior Alysha Bruce, psychology and art major, volunteers as much as she Non-prof- can. Bruce said, There is always someone or something that needs help. And if we are capable of doing so, we should do what we can. Junior Iliana Durazo, accounting major, said, I think its important to be an active citizen in your community and the best way to do that is volunteer. Through Westminster Durazo has helped out a of organizations including The Road Home, a homeless shelter in Salt Lake City. Durazo said, The community wont progress or become a better place without volunteers. Junior Christopher Roundy, biology major, has volunteered many different places. Last year he was certified as an HIV Prevention Counselor. With this certification he was able to volunteer at the University Hospital Emergency and spent a month volunteering in Africa. For Roundy volunteering has been an eye opening experience. In an email Roundy said, I volunteer because I think its important for those of us that have the time and energy to spare to put some of it back into the community. Service often times forces you to do something you otherwise would not do... it teaches you more about yourself, said Bruce. Volunteering has created unforgettable memories for these students. Bruce talked about a man, Arthur she met when she volunteered at an elderly home. One day, he asked me to marry him. I didnt know what to say, so I just giggled. Luckily he forgot about it by the next week. If you want to become involved through volunteering in the local community, there are many resources available on campus for students. Through the Center for Civic Engagement students are able to volunteer at many local organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Meals on Wheels. The Center for Civic Engagement provides a Community Service Guide on the Westminster website that lists places where students can volunteer their time. Inside the Center for .Civic Engagement there is a service opportunity bulletin board for students to check for places in need of volunteers.
