Show Moguls skiers place within top 10 at World Cup event U.S. Freestyle Ski Team prepares for U.S. Nationals at Deer Valley Candice M. White Staff Writer Traveling to Canada, Japan, the Czech Republic, Sweden, France and Italy kind of sounds like a sweet semester abroad, right? Thats exactly what three students at Westminster are doing this winter, but instead of hitting the books, theyre hitting the slopes. and Sho Kashi-m- a Bryon Wilson, Jay Bowman-Kirgi- n are members of the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team. They compete in the disciplines of moguls and dual moguls. Moguls consists of skiing down a course of bumps with two airs. Skiers are judged on turns, aerial maneuvers and speed. Dual moguls consists of the same thing, exhead-to-hedown the course. cept the skiers go ad "My goal is just to have fun with it enjoy it, see where it goes." Jay Bowman-Kirgi- n These men may not be receiving high marks on exams this winter, but theyre sure receiving high notes from the judges on the World Cup Tour. All three men placed in the top 10 at their last competition at White-fac- e Mountain in Lake Placid, N.Y., on Jan. 20. Wilseventh and Kashima son placed sixth, Bowman-Kirgi- n 10th. Kashima said, The Lake Placid event was really cold, the moguls were firm and it was a tight course. The men got a bit of a break from traveling because one stop on the World Cup Tour was their home territory, Deer Valley. The men competed in dual moguls on the 2002 Olympic Games course Champion at night under the bright lights. The competition will be televised on Feb. 10 on the Versus network. Wilson, 19, is from Butte, Mont. He started skiing when he was three years old. He grew up skiing Lost Trail and Bridger Bowl. He was introduced to mogul skiing when he was 12 years old. He was the 2007 rookie of the year and Ski Racings U.S. junior skier of the year. When he is not competing, he is ripping down the steeps at Alta and Snowbird. He also enjoys trampolines, hiking, soccer and camping. When asked if his long-ter- m goal was to make the 2010 Olympics, Bowman-Kirgin said, My goal is just to have fun with it enjoy it, see where it goes. Kashima, 21, was bom in West Texas but moved to Lake Tahoe when he was four years old. His dad decided to take a job at Heavenly Ski Resort, where Kashima started skiing the famed run Gun Barrel, the longest mogul run at a ski resort. He competed for Heavenly Freestyle Team until he made the U.S. Ski Team at 19 years old. He is the 2007 dual moguls gold medalist. Kashima enjoys football, Sho Kashima cars and baseball. His role model is Vince Young.
