Extra pounds, whether a student is a freshman or not, are not what students want to deal with when returning home at Christmas or during Thanksgiving break. With some planning and informed decisions, you can avoid the dreaded Freshman Fifteen from hitting you. Why does the Freshman Fifteen happen? Any major event can lead to weight gain. Newlyweds often report the similar weight gain in their first year of marriage. But more factors are involved in contributing to weight gain than just a change in routine. According to www. According to Wise in a 2001 essay titled School Shootings and White Denibased the Columbine incident, white people need to pull our heads out of our collective ass. Much of Wises critique on racism is based on the popular thought in America that danger is black, brown and poor and that if a person moves far enough away from those types, Americans will undoubtedly be safe. Wise takes much of his information based on crimes associated with white middle and upper classes, suggesting that white people live in a state of Wise maintains in the same Columbine article that Caucasians allowed ourselves to be lulled into a false sense of security by media representations of crime and violence that portray both as the province of those who are anything but white like us. We ignore the warning signs, because in our minds the warning signs dont live in our neighborhood ... And still we act amazed. Wise has a B.A. in Political Science from Tulane University and has spoken in 48 states, and to over 400 college ckmpuses, including Harvard, Stanford, and the Law Schools at Yale and Columbia. Wise has m provided training to teachers nationwide and has also trained corporate, government, military and law enforcement officials on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions. Wise is the author of two books, White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son, and Affirmative Action: Racial Preference in Black and White. He has contributed essays to 15 books and received the 2001 British Diversity Award for best feature essay on race issues, al, helping students with college weight gain. She suggests students start by asking themselves these questions: Have the contents ofyour diet changed since entering college? At home, you may have limited sugary cereals strictly to Saturday morning, but now, in the dorms, it can be tempting to have a bowl of Lucky Charms for dinner. Have you been eating more since entering college? You may have limited yourself to a certain number of meals while living at home, but are you adding in a late-nig- ht meal now? Fast food advertising may encourage that quick extra mean, but you may be adding a significant number of calories to your overall diet. Has your activity level decreased since entering college?
