The initial reason which the hotel gave for closing down the dance was that the event had exceeded fire code. At the time of the dance closure ASWC had sold 575 tickets. The fire code limit for the dance floor was 700; the adjoining halls and lobby had no posted limit. In addition to fire code concerns, the staff of the Radisson witnessed many violations such as: several fights involving both Westminster and triple deuce (222) unit from Utah supervised by ARWC Advisor Aimee Frosts cousin. Sarah Van Maren, ARWC historian, said, Itll be a lot of fun to help put these together and itll be even better to know that its for a good cause. These violations were corroborated and significantly added to the decision of the hotel management, to which the Student Life Office and ASWC fully complied. These extreme abuses were unexpected being that ASWC followed established protocol in planning the dance, while also adding more security, limiting the number of students allowed in the dance and instituting two alcohol checkpoints. ASWC is currently working on plans and strategies to improve security for future events. Unfortunately ASWC will not be able to grant refunds due to fixed dance costs and damage done to hotel property. If you have any questions or concerns please address them to ASWC Vice President Ray ASWC ), Bradford President Chris Wharton or Director of non-Westmins- ter (832-271- The packages also will include letters written by members of the campus com- - (832-2235- writes letters of support to the troops of Unit 222 from Utah. It is unfortunate that a relatively small group of individuals would feel it necessary to personally attack and threaten people who, for the most part, assisted ASWC on a volunteer basis. Any who would wish to join us in this gesture of good will, would be most encouraged and may feel free to contact these individuals or ASWC (832-2715- ). Photography professor David Baddly describes his series in the Faculty Art Exhibit, entitled "Where Art Was," during the opening reception for the Faculty Art Exhibit on Monday. ifiD!n)s AltoanS dds ttBn Gsdmp'5 IbdgO Julie Sismondi: It felt like it was getting a bit crowded. However, Ijdidnt think much of it because my assumption was that when a school holds a function, such as a dance, that they would choose a place that would hold at least half of the student body. Westminster messed up. That place was way too small. Secondly, the booze. It was way too expensive $6.50 for a drink! Thank God I was a D.D. that night. It seems like the prices just keep on rising. However, that should not justify anyone to steal and get the bar shut down for those who wanted to enjoy an - munity showing their support. I really think the letters will help, too, said Van Maren. Even though they dont know us, they know there are people who care about how they are doing. Katie Blumberg, ARWC president, said, I feel really good about supporting our troops with this service project. He says Jewetts remodel and the creation of the Tanner Atrium gives the exhibit a more professional look. The gallery space is great, he said. Its a much nicer venue than the exhibit had before. Baddley encourages everyone to check out this years exhibit, saying that it gives the Westminster community the opportunity to see what teachers involved in the art department are creating. Many of the members of the Westminster art faculty are nationally recognized, he says. They are doing great, respected work in their fields. The Faculty Art Exhibit is a chance for Westminster students, faculty and staff to see the high caliber of work their peers are producing. The Westminster Faculty Art Exhibit is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and runs until November 22. I think I counted at least 12 police cars, marked and unmarked, an ambulance, and even a fire truck. I want my money back and most of all the time back I spent dealing with a bunch of angry drunk people yelling at me on the way home. We should get another free dance. Jessica Felt:' The students were completely out of control. I spent the last hit of the dance trying to manage the crowd and I was right in the thick of it. Everyone had abandoned any kind of line, and were pushing and shoving, erupting into fights and acting out of control. Just from where I was standing, I saw three fistfights break out even before the decision to shut down the dance took place. It was obvious from early on that continuing the dance could possibly endanger the wellness of students as well as hotel property. With us being guests within the hotel, it seems reasonable that the hotel would feel it necessary to shut down the dance for their best interest. Its unfortunate because it has always been thought of as the best dance of the year, hut hopefully through this experience, students will realize that the actions of those individuals who were out of control are inappropriate and dangerous and repercussions need to take place. J.D Jensen: The dance was going great. I was having a swell time. All the people around me including myself were dancing and socializing in a matter that was awesome. Yes, I did see people who were slightly inebriated but I did not see anyone who was sick enough to call paramedics and police. All I saw was a lot of people who were having a good time enjoying themselves and getting their 5 or 10 dollars worth, that they paid for the dance. I think that the dance was ended prematurely and wrongfully. I believe that people should have been warned about what was happening, instead of everything just being shut down at one instant. All I have to say is that I hope next years dance is as much fun and that I it isnt stopped for some ungodly reason. i. |
