Both Chris Morin and Sharayah Coleman are on a mission, one to bring a lacrosse team to campus, the other to Bible disbring a student-le- d cussion group. Although these goals are not related to each other, both student leaders are motivated and determined. concierge Westminster offers students and faculty hundreds of helpful resources, some of w hich go overlooked. Here are a few resources to help the Westminster community get what they pay for. Career Center: located at the southeast side of Shaw. Underused Resource: Career Library, resume critiques, grad schooljob interview prep, job board for jobs on or off campus and internship opportunities. What it offers: Students w ho w ant to explore how their major relates to a specific career can benefit by meeting with one of the career counselors or by checking LACROSSE: Morin grew up on the East Coast where lacrosse is popular. After moving to Salt Lake City and living with soccer players and seeing them practice, his memories were stirred. The desire to pick up a lacrosse team really hit me hard in the spring of 2005, he said. His ambitions took him ahead of what the school would allow. The school couldnt invest thousands of dollars into soinetliing on a whim, something that might work out, just because one student was excited about it, he says, emphasizing the might. Morin attempted to raise funds this summer and contacted several interested players. He now has enough interested players for a team and is planning on joining a league, the Regional Mountain Lacrosse Conference (RMLC). He has contacted other Utah colleges and his team will be scrimmaging these schools until Westminster is ready to play as an ASWC club when the season starts. The lacrosse club has already made contact with trainers at the University of Utah , , and has been invited to play in a local tournament on Oct. 29. If we have enough guys together, we may jump right into that and see what happens, he said. d As for an official team, rather than playing as a club, time will only tell. school-sponsore- out the resources in their library. Students can check out President Bassis (who was a lacrosse player liimself) said he would like to see lacrosse on campus, but that the school w asnt going to make any official decisions until the new Health and Wellness Center and the field were completed, two years down the road, he explained. PIERCED: Referencing the crucifixion of Christ, Coleman said finding the time and will to create her club was easy. That desire to share Gods has manifested itself in my desire to create Pierced, she said. The club meets regularly on Tuesdays to read a passage from the Bible and discuss it with other students curious about what the Bible means. Although many members of the LDS religion and Chris love tianity may share some belief. Mormons and Christians do not agree about several key doctrines of their faiths. So, I felt that Christians and those interested in Christi-anit- v were left with nowhere to Bible-readin- g go. Coleman said. The club is also open to challenging views. Coleman welcomes discussion. Frankly, any discussion isnt interesting unless different opinions are shared. that Im hoping will join us in our Bible studies, she said. Colemans club is already non-Christia- ns running and holds regular meetings, but she hopes to expand. Pierced organizers would like to grow to have a larger monthly meeting with guest speakers, Q&A forums and a coffee night. As Coleman says, Christians love their coffee. Campus Concierge: Located in the north side of Shaw What it Offers: Provides a variety of campus and community services for faculty and students. Offers information about campus and community activities, sells tickets to an assortment of events, offers specially discounted tickets for the Westminster community, and acts as a guidebook for services in the Salt Lake area. Why YOU should use it: Asia Ferrin, concierge coordinator said, The more people there are that use campus concierge, the more we improve our service. The more interest and info they have with an event or service (such as vegetarian specialties) the better they are able to serve everyone on campus. Ferrin adds, We are working dilligently on becoming experts on activities and services in the Salt Lake City area. More information: Simply Registrar: Located on the upper floor of Bamberger. Underused Resource: The Utah Course Transfer Guide and the Academic Calendar What it offers: The Transfer Guide is a Web site created by the Utah System of Higher Education that allows students to find out how courses will transfer among Utah schools. It is useful for incoming students to find out which of their courses will transfer, without having to contact the transfer coordinator in the Registrar's Office. The Academic calendar lists all the important deadlines and events that are crucial to students. Rachel Carlson, publications coordinator, said. We often hear students complain that they didnt know a deadline was coming up. We do our best to contact students, either by email or by regular mail, but students dont always get the message." Why YOU should use it: Transfer Guide: its just easier than waiting to contact the one person on campus (the transfer coordinator) who can tell them the information they need. Academic Calendar: Students dont need to miss the adddrop deadline, the creditno credit deadline, or the WF deadline. These dates can impact permanent transcripts, so it's in the students best interest to pay attention to the academic calendar. Counseling Center Underused Resource: Free workshops held on stress management, meditation and test anxiety. What it offers: Provides students with helpful suggestions for managing stress and anxiety through a variety of means. It also introduces meditation practice as a skill to help balance personal stress and anxiety.
