Show THE FORUM 6 Ryan Lee Reiger Staff Writer As any oppression originates from the oppressors power profile of believing they are superior to whomever is being oppressed, and the exercising of that sense of superiority, one must demolish the origin to destroy the result What is the best way to destroy cancer? Not a quick treatment of chemotherapy, but a deep delve into the heart of it to remove the source. What is the best way to kill a weed for good? Not just gloss over it with a temporary weed-kille- r, but to pull it up from the root Instead of being chivalrous with smaller gestures such as opening car doors and standing up upon their entrance (which women can do by themselves) why dont we men be chivalrous enough to do the things women actually may not be able to do for themselves, such as opening doors toward workplace equality and standing up for womens rights everywhere. Would it not be much more effective if an outsider did these things? Then people would realize that women were not simply complaining Everyone would recognize that women truly are in need of help out from underneath the oppression that society has, consciously or not, imposed over them. While I am not denying that there are specific cultural expectations to being a man, such as the inability to much-advertis- ed cry (Marilyn Frye, Oppression), I am denying that these expectations are oppressive. Webster defines oppression unjust or excessive exercise of power. Men retain the social power and some even wield it, resulting in true as oppression. In her article, Frye discusses how oppression involves a double bind. For example, how women must be sexually active out of fear of being called frigid or a lesbian, but they cannot be too sexually active, or else they will be labeled a whore. Maybe women have even more in common with irons than we all thought? Because of mens oppression of them, women are being flattened, squashed, ironed out, etc Under such duress, they cannot Because sion of Women are not quite as lucky. Right now, they are an oppressed group. They have an oppressor there constandy reminding them that they are oppressed and they better like it Not to imply whatsoever that all men are oppressors. As I said, there are people like me who do whatever they can to become an ally, but there is an unfortunate lack of these people As shown by our dis- men's oppres- of them, women are beingflattened squashed, ironed out, etc. Under such duress, they cannot overcome the societal stig- mas that have been Feb. 23, 2005 sys- tematically sketched out for them. of oppression, majority and the allies, sadly rules, enough, are not the majority. We should not dismiss the oppression of women as something that was over in the 70s. When we take this attitude, we blind ourselves, therefore hindering current progress, if not demolishing any previouscussion overcome the societal stigmas that have been systematically sketched out for them. When it comes to this oppression of men, we have it easier. We are not under the same, oppressive amount of coercion. I live my life doing away with these social norms that men are supposed to live up to, and I am doing just fine- -I do not feel oppressed. Men can choose when they want to feel oppressed. If something comes at a man that might make him feel oppressed, he can either deflect it onto someone else instead of dealing with it, or he can simply disregard it, because he has no oppressor to keep that oppression in order. so-call- ed progress. When asked why she wrote ly-made The Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler replied, I believe that where vaginas are kept in the dark, where women have silence and women arent able to talk, usually terrible things happen to them, and where people are able to openly speak out, then amazing things begin to happen. If we decide to quit talking about this non Start March With Bang sense, it would only be a way for the dominant sector to backlash, and women every- where would be hushed, once again, into the unspoken. Using a pane of glass as the subject, Simone Weil gave an excellent interpretation. Someone who does not see a pane of glass does not know that he does not see it Someone who, being placed differently, does see it, does not know the other does not see it Frye takes this analogy and makes it more accessible for us nowadays. She describes how if one were to look at a birdcage, only inspecting one wire at a time, one would not see the big picture. One would not understand how the bird could not simply fly around the lone wire. However, once one looks at the whole birdcage, one realizes that it is an intricately-designe-d system of barriers, barring the bird from escaping The birdcage that society has set up for women is an extremely barring one. It keeps them in a double bind, it excludes them from most high-payijobs and it isolates those ng who do find a way to bypass the wires.CJ Outsourcing Hurts American Workers Stephen T. Why do corporations outsource? Allowing countries to specialize increases productivity across all countries. This specialization translates into cheaper goods and a greater variety of them for all consumers, according to Daniel W. Drezner assistant professor of political science at the University of Chicago. McKinsey Global Institute has estimated that for every dollar spent on outsourcing to India, the United States reaps between $1.12 and $1.14 in benefits. While these benefits may seem worthwhile, that does not help those workers who are being laid off, because of outsourcing. With outsourcing jobs are sure to disappear. The Third World countries are benefiting because of this, by getting jobs, but what about the people in the first world nations? Those of us who are or are in fear being laid-oof being laid-odo not care about the future benefits for the corporations, we care about the bills, our families, and food on the table.
