Show THE FORUM Jan. 26,2005 Roe v. Wade Anniversary Notec life outside of the womb. Roe vs. Wade remained relatively intact until the 1992 Kayla Smith Staff Writer case Planned Parenthood Saturday Jan. 22, marked the 25th anniversary of the historical Supreme Court decision referred to as Roe vs. Wade. Roe vs. Wade is the Supreme Court decision made in 1973 that legalized abortions nationwide. Its not just about abortion, its about the rights of women to have control over their bodies, says the president of Westminsters Students for Choice club, Pepper Hayes. Roe was a pregnant unmarried woman who filed suit under the pseudonym Jane Roe. The Supreme Court decided that a womans right to choose whether she wants to become a mother or not deserves the protection of the constitution. Roe vs. Wade states that, the interest in potential life is not compelling until viability. Viability is described as the point of pregnancy where the fetus is capable of sustaining ' of Southeastern Pennsylvania vs. Casey. This case made three alterations to Roe. Among other things, the 1992 case made it possible to regulate abortions within the first trimester. Today the fate of Roe vs. Wade hangs in the balance. With three Supreme Court justices reaching over 70 years old, and maybe be stepping down in the next few years, Roe could be altered or overturned completely. Another factor that could weigh in on the future of Roe, is Norma McCovey. McCovey is the woman formerly known as Jane Roe. McCovey has had a change of heart and is now a crusader for the pro-lif- e movement. She has the right to change her mind, but she made a choice, Hayes says. Because she made a different choice doesnt mean the choice should be illegal. I dont think she is making that big of a difference, the issue For What It's Worth Ms. & Mr. is so polarized. To commemorate the anniversary of Roe, Westminsters Students for Choice have sponsored several activities on campus this past week. This year the anniversary was the same week as the presidential inauguration. Tuesday chokers made and listened to Ani DiFranco, said Hayes pro-choi- ce T-shi- rts while showing off her hand- made shirt that said, Keep your laws off my body. On Bushs second inauguration day Hayes and Students for Choice encouraged students to wear black to mourn the potential death of women, should abortion again become illegal. Friday night. Students for Choice topped off the week with a party in the new diversity center on campus. They watched movies and remem- bered what Roe has done for women. Hayes said, It was a celebration of choice. The fun, high-spiritgathering Friday night was to celebrate, as Hayes said, the full actualization of being a woman.OJ ed Comics Fans Flock to Stores Chris Hoffman Staff Writer Problems Dear Mr. and Ms. F, Its obvious to me that my roommate has an eating disorder. It is very difficult for people with eating disorders to admit their problem. Be prepared for her to be angry or upset, but dont let her reaction dissuade you. Get other people involved; your friend needs far more help than you alone can provide. Tell an authority figure: your parents, her parents, a trusted teacher or a resident adviser.
