Hoskins Staff Writer Megan Part of what makes Westminster College unique is our location and environment. We want students to take the advantage of the state skiing, recreational opportunities, gain access to arts and some of the activities being advertised by the schools new concierge opera e desk. Located near the Student Life office in Shaw, the concierge desk is part of the many initiatives included by President Michael Bassis in the college strategic plan. The concierge desk is one of the first visual outcomes of the plan, said Chris Wharton, the concierge coordinator. We serve as a model of what the strategic plan can allow the students, staff and culture, Wharton said. The concierge desk does this by offering news on city and school events, movies, concerts and by providing discounts. Part of W'estminsters strategic plan, the college will be piloting an innovative exchange program for college students called Winter at Westminster beginning January 2005. According to Sarah Selznick, director and developer of this program, the three main goals of this program is to increase the national visibility of Westminster, attract students, and take advantage of our unique location. Current Westminster students and visiting students from other colleges and universities, will have an opportunity to enroll at Westminster for a semester earning 12-1- 5 credits, and for an extra fee participate in a variety of world-clas- s te activities. This is a very unique experience, you cant duplicate it anywhere else in the country7, says Selznick. Students in this program will take on a full academic load, and participate in these ' extracurricular activities mostly on the weekend, which will be overseen by Selznick. The college is encouraging Westminster students to participate in this program as wTell. This is going to be a really cool experience; students will get to see the competitive advantages in the market place. These activities will give students a great chance to network, if they keep in touch, who knows, they might end up getting a job, said Selznick. The cost to participate in Winter at Westminster is around $2,500. Westminster will be recruiting no more than 36 students to participate in the pilot program this coming January and is accepting applications now through Dec. 1. ' Starting in January 2005, ' applications will be accepted for the official launch program which will begin Jan. 2006.cs - Athlete of the Week: Hurc - Shana Iverson He chose Westminster for the business program and is currently a junior majoring in accounting and personal finance. Since he was a freshman, Eric has been taking a whopping 16 credit hours a semester in order to graduate in three years, Staff Writer . .This Issues Athlete of the Week is a member of Westminsters golf team, Eric Hurd. Eric has been on the golf - team since his freshman year and loves the game of golf. He says makes it ; that coach J.D. Gustin . ; i fun. Eric is originally From Rock . Springs, Wya, where he began playing golf at 5 years old. He said he grew up playing it with - - - myDad. He has an older brother t . , . who attends Southern Utah . University in Cedar City, Utah, and two younger sisters who still live in Rock Springs with their parents. Eric doesnt get home much, but he has plenty to keep him busy. He is an ASWC Student Activities Chair (SAC) member, resident adviser to 34 students in Olwel, where, he says, he likes interacting with so many people on a basis, and of course, the golf team. Eric is also student assistant for the basketball team. When asked what his responsibilities include, he said, anything the coach needs. He helps the coach get ads for upcoming games, goes to practices and does drill with the players. 7 . . ' k r day-to-d- ay taking May term classes and attending summer sessions. Its working because he is graduating . in December 2005. ' After Westminster, Eric i hopes to attend Boise State University to get his masters degree in accounting, but before that he wants to attend San Diego Golf Academy in Phoenix, Ariz. This is a two-yeprogram that offers classes in business management and also courses that get you into professional areas of golf, such as . teaching and equipment manufacturing. Eric says the program lets you hone your golf skills. To become a professional golf player, Eric will take the players aptitude test (PAT). Once he takes this test he will be able to play in tournaments for money. Right now if he wins he only gets credirtoward the h, on . . When asked how he keeps up with his studies and extracurricular activities, Eric says its a struggle, but he loves what hes doing. The important thing is to have fun.
