All three games were at home, the first on Wednesday, Sept 1 te one-touc- against Vanguard; end- ing in a 4--0 loss for out Westminster. Westminster came back strong on Friday against Montana. Despite rainy and windy conditions, they pulled a 2 win. Highlights included an assist from Travis Nicolaides to Trevor Hall for the first goal twenty minutes into the game. Montanas first goal came 18 minutes later. Westminster tied it up at two just ten minutes into the second half. Westminster finished Montana off with thirty minutes to go in the game, going home victori- Westminsters offense maintained solid possession, thanks to a strong defense for most of the second half. Four yellow cards were distributed in the second half. The first went to Josh Maxfield for running into a Newman player after a play. Late in the game the referee broke up a small scuffle between two players, giving both a yellow card. Westminster took an indirect kick with 13 minutes to go as a result of an illegal pick-u- p by Newmans goalie. The shot was deflected by the Newmans wall 3-- ous. Sundays game ended with of defenders. The fourth yellow card came before the shot when Newmans goalie delayed the game by throwing the ball to the sidelines. The athletes here are capturing that message they desire it and work' hard at it, and in the end we will see results.CS Born and raised in Billings Montana, Gustin has been around sports all his life. Not only did Gustin play for Western Montana College, he and says, Westminster might be looked at as the team to beat. Between basketball and golf Gustin will always have at least two practices a day, giving him a busy work load along with a hectic schedule. Gustin has confidence that both teams was also given the opportunity to be assistant coach for mens basketball and head coach for womens JV Basketball. Gustin was offered a full ride scholarship for a Masters will succeed. Education is very important to Gustin, and says for my student athletes, school comes first no matter what With only the knowledge of liking the game, Gustins first year of coaching golf will be an experience he will never forget Having had no prior coaching experience, Gustin looks forward to the challenges that lye ahead. Gustin gives a lot of credit to his assistants and golf pros at Bonneville Golf course, who help him teach the athletes skills and knowledge of the game. Rachel Moranda has played golf at Westminster for four years and is now the assistant coach to Gustin. She will bring a lot to this team, said Gustin. two-ho- ur practices four days a week, Gustin makes sure to give the womens basketball team a break on the weekends. For an eight-mont-h season that starts at the beginning of school and goes till March, Gustin tries to give them time away from the game. The last thing I want is for the girls to get burnt out, breaks are very important, says Gustin. There are ten women on this years Varsity team, and Gustin is looking for JV hopefuls. If anyone is interested, Gustin is looking forward to - meeting you. Gustin is glad to have a chance to lead our student athletes. We have a tremendous group of young ladies. They work hard in the classroom and on the floor, states Gustin. The assistant coach for this years team is Bill Rice. Rice played with Gustin at Western ' Montana, where Rice was also Ball and Golf coach. the assistant coach for six years. I am real excited about Rice being my assistant coach. He will bring in experience and knowledge. I feel real lucky to have him here, says head coach Gustin. Although competition will be fierce all season long, Gustin is anxious and ambitious about how the team will play against the defending national champions of South Nazarine. Another team the will look forward to playing is the defending champions of the Western Mountain Conference, Carol College. These teams are the best of the best, said Gustin, and will ultimately be the most challenging this season. When asked what he can bring to the womens basketball team of Westminster College, Gustin responded, I know what it is like, I have been through all of the trials and tribulations. I know all of the in and outs of the NAI. Gustin is very thankful for this opportunity as head coach for basketball and golf and wants to thank previous coach Tommy Conner (in Gustins eyes the best coach in the country), for having confidence in him.CJ |
