Jones moved to Oakland, Calif., after the death of her husband, LeGrand Jones, where her sisters Noni and Ellen lived. Being so close to San Francisco, Jones appreciation of the arts flourished. She frequented the theater, ballet, opera, and the symphony. The new center also includes a gymnasium, swimming pool, fitness and training cen- ter and locker and training space. Not only will this facility be used for the Griffin athletic programs, but the third floor will be the new host for the Center for Nursing Education, and will provide students with provide the students and faculty a whole new experience. Morgan says he is very excited for the new building to be finished. The colleges main goal for the Heath, Wellness, and Activities Center is to bring hope and a healthier life style to the Westminster community. The college wants students to get closer to each other and be able to develop a sense of state-of-the-- art mannequins, and classrooms. According to Executive Vice President Steve Morgan, the new Health, Wellness and Activities Center will be an amazing structure and will Morgan wants to attract potential students to the college. Westminster is not able to give student athletes scholarships, but is trying to achieve this in the future. . Morgan hopes that the college will be able to start up many different sport clubs, and give other students a chance to show their skills to the community. Athletes at Westminster College have to be part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, and Morgan wants to give student a chance to experience other types of activities without hav- - See Center pg. 8 Lack Of Parking Still Presents Problem for Commuters During Construction Kevin Rossetti next summer, there has been concern over parking and accommodating students during that time. Weve been meeting and planning for this over the past year, said Morgan, and weve even been talking about shuttling plans. The stadium is expected to be Finished in December 2005, with the artificial turf being installed in time for commencement in spring 2006. The stadium will sit atop a large underground parking lot expected to relieve parking strains great- - Inadequate parking has been a sore spot for many Westminster students. Many students returning to Westminster this fall were taken aback at what appeared to be a decrease in the number of parking stalls available. The problem is worse during peak times when many classes are in session, and many students feel that it is getting worse. Horrible, said senior Matt Johansen. It took me half an hour to find a spot, its just bad. Johansens sentiments were echoed by others. Unbelievable. I got here 20 minutes early and now Im five minutes late, said freshman Tara Chesser. My teacher is going to think Im a total flake. Maybe Im not aggressive enough. Within the past year many changes have been made regarding parking, both good for students and bad. Students are no longer able to park in the neighborhoods surrounding the school, and as a reminder, the Salt Lake City police will ticket any vehicle not displaying the appropriate residential sticker parked in those areas. ty-- Free parking spaces at Westminster have become hard to find commodities due to the closer of neighborhood parking and current construction projects on campus. This brings relief to residents living in the area who have battled with students for those parking spaces. In addition a large portion of parking in the stadium has been dug up so construction can begin on the new Health, Wellness and year. Athletic Center. In spite of students complaints, and to ease these strains on parking, there are more spots are available this year than were available last ing spaces. According to Academic Vice President Steve Morgan, there are approximately 20 more parking stalls available this year than there were last year, Due mainly to the opening of the lot east of the The parking area east of the Jewett Center has been reopened adding about 50 more stalls. More parking spots have been created in the south end of the stadium that was opened up, bringing the addition of even more park- Jewett Center and the south ern section of the stadium where we paved over the grass. Restrictions have also been placed on other parking lots that will aid students in Finding open parking spaces. The lot just west of the Jewett Center does not allow overnight parking without a student parking permit. The Foster parking lot no longer allows overnight parking. If a student does park in the Foster parking lot overnight, their car will be towed. With construction of the new stadium slated to begin Enrollment for traditional students was down slightly this year, which will ease the daytime parking strain, while graduate student enrollment was up, slightly increasing the strain on evening parking. Students have another alternative available again this year. The Westminster Ed Pass is a $35 unlimited annual UTA pass that can be used on any UTA bus or TRAX line. A Westminster Ed Pass purchased now is valid until Sept. 15, 2005, which is an annual savings of $505 over the normal cost of passes. 05 |
