This means its almost time to grab some lip balm and gear up. Until then, read on and gain some knowledge about the sport you may become addicted to for the next six months: Snowboarding. The snowboarding halfpipe is a competition, a big trench, and a way of life all rolled into one. The otigins of the halfpipe can be traced back to skateboarding. A halfpipe is literally a formation in the shape of pipe cut lengthwise in half. Skateboarders make their halfpipes out of wooden ramps, and once a skater drops in to a halfpipe, they skate back and forth inside it. Snowboarders perform many of the same tricks as skateboarders inside a halfpipe made of snow. The most common and basic trick is a grab. This is when a rider goes up into the air and grabs their snowboard. Skateboarders grab their board out of necessity to keep it with them; snowboarders have adopted the grab for style and stability In the air since their boards are strapped to their feet. The halfpipe has advanced over the years. One of the huge advancements is the invention of the pipe dragon, a grooming t, machine that cuts a uniform halfpipe instead of a team of people using shovels. near-perfec- Another important advancement in recent halfpipe history the superpipe, which was used in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. The snowboarding halfpipe has its own jargon that includes words that desenbe the physical shape of tricks done by snowboarders when riding inside the pipe. The lip is the upper edge of the halfpipe where the wall ends. Once a snowboarder or rider is inside a halfpipe, they perform tricks as they go back and forth down the pipe. These tricks all have a name and can include subtle variations that have a different name. In a competition, judges judge the riders abilities in these tricks. Each time a rider goes into the air and performs a trick, it is called a hit. When a rider goes into the air and turns 360 or more, before coming back down into the pipe, it is called a spin. Spins are measured in degrees, but someumes these are shortened to just the first digit.
