Show The Forum November 5, 2002 Page 7 Griffins Staffs Grow Lady Coaching Gain Momentum Jason Long Staff Writer The Westminster mens and womens both start their 2002-200- 3 seasons this weekend with a lot of new faces not only on the court, but also on the sidelines. The men have added Chris Jones as an assistant coach while the women have added Mark Mageras and Jaclyn Walker as assistant coaches.. Chris Jones comes to the Westminster program with a lot of experience under his belt. Jones coached with current head coach and Athletic Director Tommy Connor at Utah for three years during their great fun to the NCAA Final Four. During this time, Jones was in charge of skill development for great players such as Alex Jensen, Drew Hansen, and current New York Knicks center Michael Doleac. After his stint at Utah, Jones coached a pro team in London that featured several college players who werent able to quite make the NBA. And, most recendy, Jones has been running Champions Athletic Academy in Orem for the past three seasons. Jones responsibilities include, but are not limited to, skill defense, work with players and scouting and game preparation. Jones is excited about the opportunity to coach with Connor once again, I was ready for a change; I wanted pre-practi- ce Matthew Gaschk MSU-Northe- The momentum has finally shifted for the Westminster College volleyball team. The Griffins started the season with record and dropped 15 a straight at one point. After splitting matches against Montana and State University-Norther- n University of Great Falls, the Griffins have now won two of their last three matches in convincing fashion and played well enough to win the third. And with the Frontier Conference tournament just two weeks away, it could not have come at a better time. We came out this weekend knowing that we had the potential to win both matches, said 3-- Assistant women's basketball coach Mark Mageras joins head coach Daron Parks staff along with Westminster alum Jaclyn Walker. to get back to coaching at the college level. I am familiar with Tommys coaching style, so it should be a great fit. I am excited to be here; we have great guys who work extremely hard. On the womens side, Mark Mageras rejoins the Westminster program, as he was formerly an assistant coach under Connor with the men in their inaugural season. Before that, Mageras was head junior varsity and assi-tavarsity coach at his alma mater, Cyprus High School. Most recendy, Mageras was head varsity coach at Hunter High School for two years. Head womens coach, Daron ' nt Park, points out that no one will sacrifice more for a teanj than Mageras. Mageras, who currendy teaches at Matheson Jr. High School, cant wait for the season to begin 611 November 8, I love being here. It is a lot of fun because of the type of program we run and the type of girls we have on our Jaclyn Walker joins the staff as an assistant for the women as well. Walker is a former player under Park here at Westminster. Walker will be great in bringing ener- gy to practice everyday according to Park. Westminsters mens soccer team managed to sneak its way into the Region I playoffs, which will be played Friday and Saturday in Portland, Ore. Also making the four-teaplayoff were Concordia University at Portand, Simon Frasier, and Albertson College. As the team who won the m Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament, Concordia will host the two-da- y regional playoff. Concordia defeated Western Baptist in the final of the CCC tournament on Saturday. The official announcement on seeding and pairing for the Region I playoffs was announced Monday, after press time, but Westminster will play either Simon Frasier or Concordia, depending on seeding. Earlier this season Westminster beat Concordia 0 in the first game of the 14 regional winners and with a record of but showed that they could compete with some of the better teams in the west. 9-1- 1, against the Argos despite a drastically different playing style. Great Falls is a slower team than the other teams in the conference. Playing against them is difficult because they said sencatch you ior outside hitter Sasha Smith.
