Show November 13, 2001 Rocky Continued from page l ing funding to cover police overtime in the case of a security breach. Anderson is, however, aware that major security issues remain. Im not one of those politicians who tell the public that everythings fine... come out and have a good time. Weve known about security risks and still we see an almost complete state of unpreparedness. Referencing Sept. 11 frequently, Anderson explained the safety issues that plague air travel. 90 percent of luggage is not screened, said i is j The Forum -- 3 Anderson. Also, our countrys airlines do not match luggage with boarded passengers. Essentially, this means someone could check a bomb onto a flight, then leave and watch the tragedy unfold in the comfort of their home. Europes airlines are shooting to implement checking procedures to avoid these issues 100 percent of the time by the end of this year. The United States has no such goal. Anderson is pushing to make this a goal of our country as well. The additional cost would be $1.54 per passenger, he said. Anderson said he predicts that Salt Lake International Airport will be the first to take these precautions. On environmental issues Anderson exclaimed, We must act now to preserve whats left for future generations. He targeted the rapid increase in sprawl, saying that the Center for Disease Control has linked unwise sprawl to health problems. According to Anderson, the Legacy Highway is a perfect example of such debilitating urban planning. That Highway is a 14 mile sprawl-inducin- g environmental destruction. Anderson claims that the citys spending priorities have been out of whack for a decade. We spend $45 1 million on the Legacy Highway and $20-2- 5 million for the purchase of a commuter-rai- l. He believes that our autodependence means a severe lack of mobile freedom for a lot of people. Anderson is focusing on ways to take the power away from the automobile and give it back to pedestrians. Orange flags and sophisticated lighting at crosswalks, countdown pedestrian timers and increased enforcement for those who disregard pedestrian laws are just a few of the additions that Anderson has made to Salt Lake. Other environmental issues that the Mayor is tackling include the preservation and expansion of open space such as nearby Hidden Hollow and the Willow Heights Conservation Area up Big Cottonwood Canyon. The Green Buildings Initiative was implemented to create environmentally sound city buildings. Anderson also plans to convert 100 percent of the citys vehicle fleet to alternative fuel vehicles.
