Show December 12, 2000 The Forum - 2 Up and Down With The Yo-Y- o Man of Snowbird his talents as a By Angela Corbett Staff Writer Men of Honor is a good movie about a great man. The movie is ; based on the true story of Carl Brashear, a man who overcame racial prejudice and personal gles to "be the best." -- Brasher is played by Cuba Gooding Jr. as the man who broke ' the color barrier in a strictly segre- gated U.S. Navy division, the elite divers. The movie depicts deep-se- a Brashear's life, beginning as a sharecropper's son who is eventually lured into the Navy by a recruiter touting the wonderful opportunities available to Navy men. Once aboard The Hoist Navy diving ship, Brashear realizes that the only opportunities for black men are in the galley. While serving on The Hoist, Brashear becomes captivated with the search and rescue divers and makes it his goal to become one of them. Brashear petitions for two years to get into the Navy's diver training program, run by Billy Sunday, (Robert De Niro) a bigot who repeatedly harasses Brashear to quit the diving program. Brashear pushes forward in his ongoing attempt to live his father's wishes and "be the best," while Sunday's life and career spirals due to his lack of respect, alcoholism, and dysfunctional marriage to Gwen (played by Charlize Theron.) Brashear is determined to become a Master Chief Diver and with much perseverance, is able to cope with his injury with persistence and tenacity. Sunday, in an attempt to thwart the system and gain back his own as well as help Brashear achieve his goals, once again becomes Brashear's diving self-respe- ct instructor. I will admit that going into this movie, I did not think I would enjoy it, but I was wrong. Men of Honor has captivating characters and an inspirational story line. Cuba Gooding Jr. depicts the essence of the persistent military man well. As Carl Brashear, Gooding's charismatic performance makes for a fascinating character who the audience become mesmerized and encouraged by. Robert De Niro does a wonderful job of playing Billy Sunday.. His ability to make you despise everything about him, yet praise him for his candid leadership is marvelous. The one thing about the character I did not enjoy was the fact that Sunday is a fictional character who often upstages Brashear and the meaning of the One cold morning at Octoberfest in Snowbird, you see a group of people crowded around something.
