Show September 15, 1998 Campus Plan Unveilved Fans Cheer Soccer Team to Victory We will entertain at Town Hall Meeting by Amy Hodson Forum editor A "town hall meeting" was held with students and Dober, Lidsky, Craig & Associates, a campus planning firm, on Sept. 11 in the Gore auditorium. The meeting was held to present to students a tentative Westminster campus plan for comments and questions. Students' thoughts on the lans were encouraged by Dick )obcr, a campus planner for the firm, "because you arc the alumni of the future." Dober stressed the plan was not final and was not an architechtural drawing. According to Dober, campus planning involves looking at what a campus needs, what a campus has, and what the alternatives are. It is an idea of how Westminster can continue to grow when "land is in short supply." Dober, Lidsky, Craig & Associates have consulted on over 350 campuses in the United States, including Stanford and Harvard. Dober said Westminster's campus, with 27 acres, is the smallest yet. Some of the planning for the campus involved looking at surrounding residential areas, buildings used most on campus, parking, utility lines, scenic views from campus, and even fault lines close to campus. According to Charles Craig, campus planner, a fault line does not run through the middle of campus, but does come close. The eastern half of campus is on sturdy ground, but buildings on the other half must be designed differently because of a "higher -- Chris Keddington, New buildings included in the plan were two additional residence halls, a Health and Wellness Center, and a large academic building. The new residence halls are planned to form a around a central green and the Health and Wellness Center was proposed to be behind Payne Gymnasium. The new academic building would straddle the area between the tennis court and Payne Gymnasium. The proposal included three additions to buildings, a new facade to the greenhouse-styl- e Shaw Center, a small loft theater in the Jewett Center, and an extension to Gore. Several campus design projects were discussed. Dober said a more defined streetscape was needed on 1700 East, with trees and lights because "it is a visually important area." Dober stressed open spaces are important to campus life, and planned for the return of the soccer field, which was partially over for more parking. faved defined courtyards were also included in the proposal. The firm would like biddings, such as Giovale Library, to be "360 pe See Campus Plan, page by Mindy Rae Jensen Production manager The Westminster Men's Soccer team won their past three home games, on Sept. 10, 11, and 12.. Coach Connor Continued from Page 1 When asked how thin the line is between athletics and academics, Conner says,"Well at Westminster there is no thin line. It's definitely education first. At this level, being we definitely are students first, non-scholarsh- ip, athletes second. That's the type of kid I'll recruit, that will be the hilosophy of the program as ong as I'm coaching it." Inis philosophy presents a challenge because while U.S. News & World Report recently rated Westminster College in the top tier as one of the best private colleges in the west, the basketball program has no recent history to entice prospective basketball recruits. Connor recognizes that dilemma but seems confident 3 same kid Utah or BYU is recruiting, it's just obviously not going to happen." The Forum fWKTMtfrOTEMGaBffiOffloassraamMGitv Editor Connor's strategy to building the team is to, "create a big enough pool of kids who might be interested, get them on campus, leam more about the college and then hopefully be able to find those who would like to receive this great education and be involved with competitive basketball." "I am only going to recruit the level of kids who are committed to education and are bright high school kids who would be great contributors to Westminster," he Faculty Advisor Amy Hodson Rulon Wood Production Manager Staff Writers Mindy Rae Jensen Desiree Bania Copy Editor Angy DeSimone Photo Editor Amy Young Business Manager Ophelia Mose said. "That's going to be the biggest challenge because I'll be recruiting against other people who are offering athletics money or packages where they don't nave to pay, but my selling point is tnat they can't beat this education." Connor admits the field of recruits will be narrow. "At this level you're also picking up kids that maybe were recruited at a higher level and were dropped or something didn't work out, so it's a little unique. Certainly I want to get the best I can at this level, but I mean I .am not going to recruit the students, faculty, staff and other readers.
