The average college student watches 10 hours or television a week, compared to the national average of 8 hours a week. "College students are already living without TV and this is a good opportunity to keep it that way," said Medved. After the lecture Medved opened the floor to questions and answers. During this time Dr. Susan Cottier, associate professor of history, took an opposite view of Medved's. "I feel as though you give the public no credit for discretionary taste. It is an individual's job, not Hollywood's to police the industry," said . 26-2- TIAA-CRE-F. Cottier. Finding a job while on vacation does not usually enter many students minds, but companies have decided to use spring break to their advantage. d Employers have become a as and result, companies join in on career fairs and hold interviews at various campuses. In Florida, however, companies such as IBM and the Secret Service flock to beaches during spring break to recruit potential employees. "In the early 1990s, it was just such a different world," said Cindy Greeno at IBM. "Now the competition is heating up among all employers. Overall, the audience seemed to be open to Medved's message. "I was glad to see an audience from a school as liberal as Westminster be as receptive as they were to him," said KyRic Tucker, junior accounting major. "What he had to say about the amount of TV watched bn average was very insightful," said Rindee Bailey, senior economics major. "I believe Hollywood often does deny the degree of its influence on the general public. However, I like Susan Cottier's oint about our being intelligent eings of choice. There are negative influences out there other than movies and we have the choice to subject ourselves to them or not," said Trever Burnett, senior biology major. To combat the negative influences of TV, Medved suggest putting yourself on a television diet and choosing the movies you view carefully. "Schedule the TV you view. Cottier was disappointed Medved did not represent both sides of the argument. "The lecture was partly funded by the Republican Party and it appeared as though he was following a political agenda. It offended me as a college professor, on a college campus, that he did not present the argument in all of its complexity," said Cottier. She added, "There are too many relationships and private values that affect people than just TV. But, what the nell, it is a free he most likely never knew what hit him." recalled Springman. "It was awful for the rest of the flightdeck crew. We were given e, plastic bags, and walking had to scour the 4.5 acre flight deck looking for pieces of the man to ensure the safety of the remaining crew while we were still in maneuvers." Mobility, flexibility and combat readiness are the primary characteristics that highlight the USS Nimitz and her crew. Students participating in the career fair were able to fill out resumes and go to interviews at an ocean side resort for interviews. Choosing to recruit students at unlikely places, such as the beach, allows the companies to show a more casual side to their potential employees and get in contact with the younger hires. According to Kathy Buscher of John Crane Belfab, manufacturers for the semiconductor industry, "It's a good way to show we're real people." Spring break career fairs, have been both accepted and questioned. For the participating companies such an event pays off. Some students return home with job offers and companies are able to fill jobs. Shelly Heed, a junior at Westminster, wonders how students looking to find a job will be taken seriously when they arrive for interviews in beach attire. With the unemployment rate at only 4.6 percent fast month, unconventional recruiting may just be the answer for companies in need of employees. |
