President I have had the opportunity to learn and accom- plish some amazing things. I have learned how to make a student government work and how to increase its effectiveness. The faculty have been encouraged to interact with students outside of the classroom, and they are doing this with eagerness and zeal. I have learned how to demonstrate to administrators that students are concerned about participating in campus development. student presence on various committees, such as the Presidential Search, Buildings and Grounds, and Strategic Planning committee, the administration has By increasing Michael Robinson trustees for achieving viability for the future of students at Westminster College. During my administration we were successful in the exciting fight for representation on the board of trustees. Student interaction with the board of trustees was something that needed to happen in order for the college to include student needs in their overall objectives. The fact that a student is now invited to attend board meetings and present opinions is a landmark event which has moved Westminster students into an active role in administrative decision making for the college. The fact that the administration was convinced to come, with open arms, to discuss student concerns and issues shows how effective a cooperative relationship can be. Essentially, student government, under my direction, has gained an increased momentum in stronger (convincing) representation and leadership. If these are your goals, I will endeavor in the next year to assure a lasting tradition of strong student leader- me. policy. I have come to understand the problems within our student government. I have also seen and felt the frustration of our student body. I am motivated to run for president because I have the experience and knowledge to organize and direct ASWC away from these problems. First, the ASWC needs a presi Brian Pilling Jed Arveseth non-tradition- al non-tradition- My motivation to become President of the A.S.W.C. is driven largely by a desire to serve my peers. The students of Westminster College have given me a sense of collegial pride and community. As a result, I would like to offer myself to the students of Westminster College to return that which has been given to constitutions and organizational charters. I will use this knowledge to help educate others on the necessity of organization and adherence to ship! One problem that I find with the college is the division made and trabetween ditional students. Trouble can be found hidden within these labels, for they lead to a segregation that does not need to exist. Division also can be found among different programs. We, the students of Westminster College are a community sharing a commonality that is cherished. False distinctions should not be made due to statistical data that has no true meaning to the contributions that each student makes. This in my opinion is a problem that needs to be alleviated. Therefore one of my goals is to help fuse the chasm between the so called traditional and students andor between different programs. This can be achieved if we pull together and focus on the commonality that we all share. However, this still gives us the wonderful opportunity to treasure the diversity and experience that every student brings to Westminster College. With this attitude, I have gained the respect of administrators, faculty, staff, and most importantly, the students. The ASWC has to reach out to the student. I would like to continue this and concentrate on giving everyone the opportunity to take advantage of their student activity fees. I want impact I can make through this service. Over the past year I have worked closely with ASWC and SAC, planning several activities. I would now like to continue my involvement on a greater level. I think the greatest problem that always seems to plague ASWC is lack of publicity. No matter how much effort goes into informing students, few rarely know when events are being held. I would like to see the bulletin boards in the classrooms and halls and the display case in the plaza be put to better use. I want to get rid of all of the credit card and earn money for school propaganda from these boards so they can be used as a way of communicating what is happening to students. I would also like to see a more centrally located calendar of events. I will concentrate my efforts on students to see the become more involved, perhaps by offering more events their children non-tradition- al can attend. I want to end the problem of students asking where their activity fees go by giving them the activities they want. I will remain open and easily accessible in an effort to create a greater feeling of community on campus. Thank you for your time and your vote.
