Borrowers electing Sallie Maes Income Sensitive Account must repay loans within the standard 10- year repayment term for Stafford and SLS loans, and the maximum repayment term for loan consolidation accounts. Sallie Mae customer service representatives will suggest a minimum monthly repayment schedule based on individual income and educational debt. Marshall, executive vice president of marketing. Because the trade-of- f to lower payments means higher total costs, Sallie Mae will be counseling borrowers to consider the income sensitive option as a last resort. Although scheduled payments must equal at least the interest that accrues each month, Sallie Mae will make additional payment relief available to borrowers in need. Sallie Mae borrowers may drop out of the income sensitive plan at any time by notifying Sallie Mae or by not reporting their annual income. Sallie Mae will then convert their account to a standard repayment plan. In compliance with the Higher Education Act of 1992, Sallie Mae and other holders of FFELP loans are offering income sensitive repay- ment by July 1, 1995. Sallie Maes plan is available to any Stafford, SLS or loan consolidation borrower for which it may service. Everyone enjoys a good laugh and when its a real gut ache, you know, the kind that causes one to double over, good things are happening throughout the body. The April 1, 1992 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association documents the effects humor and laughter on the body. Laughter disrupts Breathing your normal respiration pattern and increases your breathing rate. This increases the amount of oxygen in your blood. Muscles Frequent hearty laughter provides limited muscle conditioning. Also, the relaxation following laughter helps break the pain spasm cycle common in some muscle disorders. A Cardiovascular System good laugh causes a temporary increase in your heart rate and blood pressure. This increases circulation and aids the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues throughout your body. Breathing, muscles and the cardiovascular system are vital. If laughter increases life, then perhaps we should be laughing more and worrying less. Norman Cousins book, Anatomy of an Illness, analyzes an illness in which Cousins spine and large joints became painfully inflamed. Cousins made the joyous discovery that 10 minutes of genuine belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give me at least two hours of pain free sleep. Several studies have demonstrated that exposing people to humor- ous experiences, such as funny videotapes or comedians, significantly increased their ability to deal with pain. Researchers are trying to determine whether humor and laughter increase certain brain chemicals, endorphins, which are the bodys natural pain fighters. Scientists are also looking at laughters effect on certain chemicals, such as adrenaline and dopamine, which increase alertness during periods of stress according to the March, 1993 Mayo Clinic health letter. If youre a student and you receive educational assistance from your employer you may be in for a greater surprise. Every year congress has excluded employer assisted educational benefits from state and federal income tax under section 127 of the Internal Revenue Service code. Section 127 has not been extended for 1995. If this bill is not extended, students who receive educational assistance from their employer will be subject to taxes on the money they receive. Clay Shaw from Florida have sponsored H.R. 127. The bill would permanently extend section 127 of the IRS code, which provides an exclusion from income for the value of employer provided education assistance. According to Levin and Shaw when this provision expired on Dec. 31, 1994 so did the hopes of many working students, With it went the hopes of thousands of middle class employees who use these benefits to attend school and further their education, they argued. According to a study by Coopers and Lybrand, more than 70 percent of these workers made less than $30,000 per year while earned less more than one-thir- d than $20,000 per year. Congressman Bill Orton has cosponsored H.R. 127 in Utah. Levin and Shaw claim that H.R. working students develop important skills needed to compete in the challenging economy of today. Business will also suffer if this provision is not extended. They use section 127 as a valuable retraining tool for workers whose jobs have become obsolete.
