Show PINION November 15, 1994 STUDENT POLL by Editor, In this years Forum, I have seen mundane fluff touted as journalism and good, honest reporting. After all, do I honestly care what happened at an activity after it has occurred? It doesnt promote thought or action. It serves as a way in which to promote an interest other than that of an academic, political, artistic, or ideological nature. I also take offense that, at the most, only one fifth of the paper is of any interest at all. Concerning the letters to the editor, why is it that one particular letter (Anthony Gilles frV, October 25 edition of the Forum) took three weeks to be printed? Doesnt the Forum have a job to print its letters in a timely manner if submitted by the appropriate deadline? Tell us Dave, why did it take so long? My other complaints center on the November 8 edition of the Forum specifically, and the paper generally. In the letter to the editor it y seems there was a teeny, mistake made at the end of a letter advocating a judiciary committee. It reads in the Forum as, The 220 students who now support his cause. But in the original draft it itsy-bits- Dear Mr. Neisler: As an alumna of Westminster I have often had a chance to read over and enjoy articles in the Forum. It usually contains information in which I have an interest. During this past week I picked up a copy of the Forum (Oct. 25, 1994) and noticed the picture taken during the annual spaghetti dinnercasino night. My first surprise was seeing the picture taken of the blackjack tables; they were basically empty. When we were there at the tables (for over an hour), the tables were full and people were waiting for a seat. Wouldnt that have been a more accurate picture to put in print? Then I began to read the article. Informative as it was, what Space Continued from Page 2 been greater than it is today. The papers high jour- nalistic integrity just couldnt allow such a blatant error to go unaddressed. After all, people might get the wrong idea. On the front page there are several pictures of Westminster covered in a beautiful blanket of snow. Who cares? I was there, saw it for myself. Big deal. On the second page is our wonderful editors sic message. A Word form the Wise. Really? When people call themselves things like righteous, wise, intelligent, able, and misunderstood, I often find them quite suspect. And quite so. But on page three we get a true revelation from the Gods of higher journalism. ASWC $ Invites Westminster Ghosts and Goblins to Party,? and, The Nightmare at Hogle Hall. These stories come with fotographs and high adventure. These little gems of journalism changed my life. Forwarded my understanding by years. The party was a success. Whew. The suspense at whether or not the Halloween spooks and spirits could pull it off was too much. And hey, the third floor of Hogle Hall was the most scary. Ill be sure to cut out the article and trick-or-tre- at caught my attention was the word Dealers. This word was used as a plural and yet contained an apostrophe indicating possessive case. I was then interested to find out if this was a unique mistake or if it was typical of the Forum. I continued to read several articles and was chagrined to find that errors of this type were commonplace throughout the issue. Most of the errors would not be caught by a spelling verifier on a computer but would be caught by a proofreader (if there is one). Some examples: Page 1: ...networks inability, Hogel Hall, ...slipped into a easier mood..., Page 5: ...was the schools small size, ...being uninformed a problematic is inconducive, young man whos behavior may For instance, as a result of the Apollo spacecraft fire that took the lives of three astronauts in 1967, NASA began an arduous materisearch for als to be used in manned spacecrafts. Page six was interesting. Half the page devoted to a movie review (with another picture!!!). Thank God we all have a special moment where Warren Beatty and Annette Bening are captured in our Forum. Despite the fact that it only received two arbitrary stars, I want to rush out and see this movie. And when the appropriate scene emerges, yell out to the audience, That picture was in OUR school newspaper. Cheers and joy will follow. Ill do the same with Squanto too. Many thanks. After finding this many errors in spelling, grammar and usage on two pages, I quit reading. I was embarrassed to think that this paper represents my alma mater and is sending out a negative massage about the college. My hope is that someone will take the time from now on to ensure that the Forum speaks well of Westminster by using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. You may think that people will not notice, but they do. Sincerely (Mrs.) Joy H. Another important area of development in medical technology is in the use of computers. Better capabilities arc now available as a result of space exploration. Can you put a dollar amount on a childs life saved by the indirect technology gained by space exploration? If we arc to benefit from the technology achieved through space exploration, we must continue Americas dream to explore. Since the beginning of time people have had a quest for knowledge and desire to explore. Exploration and social evolution are full of beginnings and ends. The Puritans were successful because they were part of a combined social movement. They saw the vision and purpose and pulled together. America as a nation needs to do the same if we arc going to provide for the future of our nation. Many successes of the space program were exciting and inspiring. The United States, without question, was a leader in space X-r- ay exploration and the nation benefited immensely from the pride, scientific discoveries, prestige and technology gained. The Challenger accident made the nation aware of NASAs shortcomings, but it didnt stop our pursuit of exploration. America has made many valuable discoveries on the planet Earth, but now it is time to go beyond. The American Association for the Advancement of Science has initiated Project 2061 in an attempt to help the nation achieve scientific literacy and teach the importance of space exploration. Its purpose is to teach all children the importance and need of a basic education in science, math and technology. There is no valid reason, economic, intellectual or social, why the United States cannot transform its schools to make scientific literacy possible for all students. So the next time you arc contemplating questions of money allocated by the government for space exploration, remember More than bread feeds the human soul. . |
