Show Craig Glidtiien chosen as new Assistant Art Professor by Melissa 'libbitts Forum Staff Writer After a national search, Craig Glidden has been chosen ' as the new Assistant Professor of Art for Westminster College. A previous adjunct professor at Westminster, Glidden also filled in during the sabbatical of former art professor Don Doxcy. Originally from Wyoming, Glidden said he was always interested in art. At the age of 19 he moved to Minneapolis to attend art I really wanted to go school. New York, but I think to straight even then I knew there would be a real culture shock, so I went halfway to Minneapolis, he said. He was awarded a bachelors of fine arts from Arizona State University, then completed his masters of fine arts at the University of Utah. A finalist for the Utah Arts Council show in 1994, Glidden has won several distinguished awards, including best of show at Arizona State University, and both first place, and best of show at the University of Utah. His work has been featured at the Utah 94 Painting and Sculpture Show, the Art Barn in Salt Lake City, and the Westminster faculty art show. Glidden feels that art can compliment many different majors and shouldnt be seen as an intimida tion class. Art is a skill, thats true, but its more about seeing, and said Glidden. being creative, Everyone is creative, they just might not have had the opportunity to be creative through art. New equipment, and the possibility of new courses arc both important to Glidden. His regular syllabus includes guest speakers, plus visits to local art museums, studios and galleries. I think its good for artists to get out and sec other artists and what theyre doing- - even in a liberal education class. It gives them a glimpse into the art world, Glidden said. He also added it was good for students to see the types of jobs available for art majors. For Glidden, grading is one of the hardest parts about teaching, but liking many different kinds of art makes the grading easier. Its really all very subjective, but I think Irn really democratic because I like so many different styles. he explained. Glidden has spent the past four years in Utah, where he also works in his private studio in His most recent work has focused on mixed media, oil or a combination of the two. Mixed media really reflects the world and how I see it, said Glidden. Its a way for me to use art to figure out the world. Sug-arhous- e. Every year Dr. Patricia Coleman, English professor, and Shakespeare- aficionada, heads up a Shakespearean workshop that spends four days at Southern Utah University in Cedar City at the Shakespearean Festival. However, last summer Coleman was unable to attend, so English professor Judy and 53 students and friends headed out on what has become an annual pilgrimage. Its fair to say that people go thinking it is going to be an intellectual experience, which it is. said however it is also entertaining and festive. The Utah Shakespearean Festival was founded in 1961 with its first performance in 1962. The Festival founder is Fred C. Adams. k The initial season attracted 3,276 people. In 1993, nearly 125,000 ticket holders watched 180 performances over the season. The Festival is now a year-rouoperation with a budget exceeding $2.7 million. This year the workshop went to see, As You Like It, Loves Labours Lost, and Richard III all written by Shakespeare, and The Shoemakers Holiday written by Thomas Dekker, a Shakespeare contemporary. Each day following the last nights performance, there would be a seminar on each of the plays. The discussion was open to the audience so it would get sort of loud and wild. Levanthal said. There were back stage tours, preperformance briefings, a Royal Feaste, and The Greenshow which is comprised of musicians, a Juggler, a Storyteller, a Sorcerer, and a Falconer. These were held on the lawn before each play. " Allen-Levanth- al Allen-Levanth- The plays are performed on two stages. The outdoor theater, Adams Memorial Shakespearean Theater, is the most authentic Elizabethan theater in the world. The Randall L. Jones Theater, is a rt indoor theater, offering classics of world drama. A Renaissance study center plus two additional theaters are being built which will complete the Shakespearean Festival Center for the Performing Arts. The 1995 season will feature The Tempest, Henry VIII, Much Ado About Nothing, and Othello, plus two other plays, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and You Cant Take It with You. The workshop is listed in the Spring 95 schedule and costs $195, which includes four plays, plus accommodations. state-of-the-a- |
