In the bar Wood secs his lifelong idol Orson and Welles unselfconsciously marches right up and introduces himself (still in drag). Welles treats him as an equal and commiserates with him. Welles also tells Wood his secret to movie making, and the key to this movie. Visions arc worth it. Why spend your life making someone elscs movie? Of course there is some humor involved when a mans uncompro-mise- d vision results in Plan 9 From Outer Space." Wood never seems to require a second take, despite actors walking into walls and knocking over tombstones. People dont notice those things, he says. Its the big picture that counts! However, this movie is as the not filled with trailer may lead you to believe. It is ironic and satiric, but it is also moving. We laugh with the characters but not at them. Kdward I). Wood Jr. is portrayed enthusiastically by Johnny Depp. Its difficult to recognize Depp as the same man who played the lead in Burtons Edward a few years ago, and not by Shawn Kurnnen Forum Staff Writer Edward D. Wood Jr. was considered one of Hollywoods worst directors. He was responsible for films such as Bride of the Monster and Plan 9 From Outer Space, which are available now only because they arc frequently showcased as bad movies. In addition to being known for his truly mediocre work, Hdward Wood was transvestite. Tim Burtons latest offering, Kd Wood, is a chronicle of this mans most prolific years, and even though the movie seems almost d for another bad I also a lolly-woo- prc-dcstin- comedy, Burton, unexpectedly, pulls it off. Instead of wallowing in the transvestite obvious gags and belly-laugh- s, mockery, Burton showcases the passion and drive that Wood must have had to create his films. 'Phis movie is a celebration of a mans uncompromised vision. Late in the film, Wood retreats to the nearest bar extremely agitated because his financial backers arc interfering with his work. 'Phis film showcases his range of talent. Center stage, however, seems to belong to Martin Landau. Landau has the daunting task of playing the great Bela Lugosi, and he delivers a performance worthy of an Oscar nomination. Lugosi was in the twilight of his career and had been a morphine addict for 20 years when he met Wood. Landau manages to show us the dignity of the man as well as his struggle to maintain it. The chemistry between Landau and Depp is remarkable. The cast in general is engaging and believable and contains many recognizable faces such as Bill Murray, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jeffrey Jones (the principal from Ferris Bueller). The character of Kathy, Woods second wife, is shallow and is a shameful waste of Patricia Arquettes talent. Filmed entirely in black and white with classic 50s camera angles, this film will be fun for buffs.
