Show Forum . A&E The Loved Ones At The Zephyr ' William Athery Forum Contributing Writer N The Zephyr club pairing on April 8 and 9 was interesting to say the least. Opening the show were Salt Lake Citys band, The Broken premier honky-ton- k Hearts. They wanned up for a young band out of Oakland, California, who dress as if the English Invasion had recently hit our shores. The Loved Ones are billed as a mod band. Ill get to my impressions later, but Fust the Broken Hearts and the Zephyr audience. The Zephyr club used to be one of my favorite haunts. There is always a hot band playing the club, and the sound is usually pristine. In recent years, my fervor has declined due to the crowd it attracts. As an example. Ill recount a conversation I had on Friday night with two patrons. Im sitting comfortably at the bar, sipping on a beer, when two gentlemen ask if the seats next to me are taken. I reply that they are not, and the two take their places. The next question was, Whos that on stage? I tell them that it is The Loved Ones, and that their First set is just beginning. Well, what kind of music do they play? As if the blasting harp work of lead singerharpist Bart Davenport wasnt explanation enough, They play the blues, I told them. They ask, Are there any babes here tonight? Their reason for entering the club was revealed. They didnt know who was playing. They couldnt divine what these lunk-heagenre the musfc was were in search of babes." Yea, there are some here; most are taken, and the ones ds that arent are too fat, was my reply to this question. I hoped my look of disdain and sarcastic tone would encourage the two to leave me alone. Bills a poet and doesnt know it Several songs later, as I watched them scan the bar, anxiously looking for some babes with pants hot enough to spend the night with two macho-mach- o men, one of them asked me another question. So, are you just going to sit there drinking and listening to the music all night? This time I gave my interrogator my most famous (and in my own mind), scathing, blistering look of pure contempt. Yes, I am. Do you have a problem with that? Im a skinny guy with glasses and leaky pens in my shirt pocket The inquisitor could have easily beat the hell out of me, but I have a certain presence, and my eyes can shoot Fireballs. Im positive the thought of punching me entered his muscled brain. One look into my eyes and he turned away mumbling something to his partner. Thankfully, at this point. Max Kaminski, drummer for the Broken Hearts arrived to relive the old days growing up in Granger.Utah. I didnt have to relate to the two Studs (the television show) rejects any longer. I did notice them leavlater. ing the club babe-les- s Now, fool, if I enter the confines of the Zephyr club, I am there for the music, not babes. If I want babes, Ill visit some other meat market say Mannys, the Redwood Lounge, Club Carrera or the Bar-in search of a hot divorcee of advanced years. So leave me the fuck alone, and let me enjoy the music. air-head- ed X, 9 April 19, 1994 A Mod Revival? In the two weeks since I saw them last. The Broken Hearts have worked up new material. The harmonies between Andy Balanger, guitarvocals and Lara Jones, vocals are, if anything, sweeter than before. Each take their turn at soloing, and it is good, so good. When they come together, I shake my head in wonder and gaze heavenward to see if the good Lord will manifest his pleasure, too. guitarist, Jerry Cochran was glued to the side of the stage watching Lee Jeffries, Big Sandys pedal steel man, during their recent Bar and Grill performance. He is now a more inspired player, and his stage presence is more conFident. Rock solid on the bass is new man, Jim Rosanblam. Max is a pro on the drums and so is guitarist Tim Huntsman. Theyve postponed entering the studio for a few weeks. I hope they hurry and get the recorded version out soon, because I cannot wait to hear it. The Loved Ones have the English mod look perfected. They are all skinny little guys; their pointed shoes and sharkskin slacks accentuate the slim look. They have their hair cut in fashionable fashion, with instruments of the mop-to- p vintage variety and stage moves to match. Davenport wriggles and writhes about the stage like a diminutive Eric Burden or Van Morrison circa 1962. His voice is a near perfect match to that of Phil Alvin. On the white Stratocaster is yet another guitar hero. Xan McGurdy effortlessly coaxes the most amazing blues licks from his guitar. Mid-wa- y through the second for its set, he switched to a True-Ton- e sound. higher, crisper Fid-dlerste- el difficulty with themod categorization. The young English bands of the early 60s were in love with American blues. The mods of the same period took inspiration from Motown and James Brown. I hear more pure Chicago blues than soul or early WhoSmall Faces in The Loved Ones music. One highlight of the live set and the first single from their album, is a cover of James Browns Lickin Stick. That song is a definite demonstration of the mod influence. The total package is a combination of R n B, soul, blues, and there is a clear nod to the sound of early Blasters records. They cant avoid the comparison with Davenport on vocals. The Zephyr audience loved the Loved Ones. They filled the dance floor in a biand zarre joining of aging, with Slimfast guzzlin, females in tow, frat boys and so- -, rarity girls, grunge kids, studs on the prowl dressed in Polo and the remaining Broken Hearts fans. Only in the Zephyr could such a cluster come together. Their dance steps were some of the worst Ive viewed in recent memory. They paired off, hands waving in the air, for some weird mating of Saturday Night Fever with the moves of the hated or they replicated the gyraline dance tions of the party scene in the 60s cult film The Trip. A few waltzed or attempted to jitterbug on the crowded floor. Many in the group were so inebriated they would have danced to an individual playing spoons or a kazoo on stage. It was a good night with two brilliant bands. Truly a peculiar night out on the town in Salt Lake City. " The setting is a summer camp where by eight friends are reunited as grown-up- s the camp director who knew them as children. Each of the eight have led different lives, some married each other, some have light-heart- ed suffered personal tragedies and some are successful, but all are still children at heart when they are brought bxk to the summer camp of their youth. The story is lighthearted, but deals with very real situations like adultery, the death of a spouse, or taking business too seriously to enjoy life. One very likable character has led a hard life of sex, drugs, ll and returns to the camp to and everyones surprise. The movie is Filled with camp pranks activities that bring good memories to and anyone who has attended summer camp. The actors include Elizabeth Perkins, comedian Kevin Poliak, Diane Lane and Matt Craven. Both the young and old roles of the wise camp director are played by Alan Arkin. Each character is developed ex- tremely well, and reminded me of many of rock-n-ro- my own acquaintances. For a good video rental with no deep story lines, I recommend Indian Summer "available in the new release section at most video rental stores.
