Show A.I.M. - Life is sacred ' n 1 - : F ' ,.r : srr. Cc' y have lived the life of being in harmony with all that surrounds us. It is a belief that all humankind are related to each other. Each has a purpose, spirit and sacredness. It is an understanding with the Great Spirit, or Creator, that we will follow these ways. And in this understanding we believe we are related to all other living species: the Winged Ones, The Four Legged, all plant air, life, and all other elements of life fire and water. The sun, moon and stars are there to guide us. The Creator also gave us special instructions of how to live with one another. How the women are to care for the future generations, today, tomorrow. How men are to provide for the generations, today and tomorrow. These instructions and understandings have been the basis for our spiritual awakening. We have come to practice them daily. The philosophy has endured and cared for us. All life is sacred, said Banks. We are taught to consider seven generations into the future. What will be the legacy of people today? Are we going to leave tapes and videos of what a tree looked like? Will the stories? stories about animals be just that Will there be any moose or bear for. them to see? The pain isnt reserved for college persons only. To the residents who live near the college, Westminsters parking problem are a malignant menace. When the lots are full, students spill over into the surrounding streets. Some students are forced to park as many as four blocks away from This undoubtedly causes the college. trouble with the neighbors, who find student cars in their driveways, tire tracks on their lawns and every legal parking place radius filled with Westwith in a le At times minsters parking problems. weve had to have our maintenance crews replace residents sprinklers that students have driven over, said Burton. We are related to this Mother Earth; we would like people to understand this relationship. In 1978, the Sacred Run covered 500 miles. Runners covered 100 miles a day. Continuing the tradition, they ran 500 miles each year through 1983. In 1984 they decided to cross the U.S., from New York to Los Angeles, accomplished in 52 days. In 1988, they sprinted from New Yak to San Francisco. For the 1989 run, participants arrived in Hiroshima, Japan, on Aug. 6 to coincide with annual services memorializing the hundreds of thousands of people who died as a result of the atomic bomb. The runners traveled from England to Moscow in 1990. They went through the old villages and dusty roads to deliver their message. Inspired by their words, people from various countries in Europe joined their ranks. In 1991 , they ran from Vancouver, B.C., to Montreal, Canada. Runners from Maine joined them as well. This year, runners have joined from as far away as Japan, Finland and Washington. The youngest runner is 10 years old, the oldest in his 60s. We shall never abandon our spiritual commitment, explained Banks. Never. Campus security offers escort services to students at night, but security guards are unable to leave the campus for legal reasons, and from four blocks away a security guard isnt going to be able to prevent a student from being assaulted. The possible legal ramifications from an incident like that are certainly enough to warrant another tuition hike. So with all these problems, youre probably wondering what the answer is? Well, I may not have the answer, but I do have some advice for the administration of this college. As enrollment increases, the number of people in search of a free parking space will also increase. The more people who attend this college, the greater the parking fiasco. Even worse than parking trouble, Westminster college is in danger of losing the small image that it sells itself on. Its my opinion that the powers that be in this college need to consider something called a lower enrollment cap before parking on this campus rivals Manhattan for a the worst parking in the United States.
