Show Without Id: Paying For Payne Gym Now Required by Mary Lang Forum staff writer . Effective March 3 , all those using Payne Gym have had to present a validated staff or student identification or purchase a gym pass upon entrance. This is a policy that has been around for several years, Dean of students, Gary Fitzer, said, but has been enforced with varying degrees of success. Fitzer said the policy is being reinforced due to complaints about the character of some people using the facilities. It lookedas though there may have been potential for gang activity, he said. We have recently seen isolated incidents of gang graffiti on campus, Fitzer said. He said the individuals in question are of Payne Gym. not college students or paying citizens, but young people. By reinforcing the policy, the college is able to maintain control of individuals using the facilities, he said. Senior Kevin Williams said, Ive chased a few kids out of there. I work out in the weight room about four times a week. They never really ask for ID, but Ive never seen anybody doing anything suspicious. Everyone is just working out. I havent received any complaints, said one weight-roomonitor. The people I see in here come in here almost every day; most of them are students. If I dont know them, I ask them for ID. Ive heard that there were problems with 14 and kids coming in here to work out. I guess the school could be held liable for them, she said. m 15-year-- When I go down to use the weight room, they usually ask for ID, depending upon whos working, said sophomore Chris Serral. Fitzer said the responsibility of enforcing the rules in Payne Gym has fluctuated between campus security and the Campus Life intramural office. With a combined effort, the situation can be kept under control. The revenue from passes has been dropping while participation has been increasing, he said, and the fees collected help maintain the equipment and the building. Fitzer said the policy is in response to a need to control the access and use of Payne Gym and to assure that the level of participation and the revenues newly-enforc- ed correspond.
