Show I Campus News Campus Support Group Begins For Victims Of Alcoholic Victims j byKatyByrom Forum staff writer Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 18, support meetings for the Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOA) will start for Westminster students. The group will be directed by Ginny Mead, Westminsters prevention program coordinator, who has 15 years of experience with running groups like ACOA. A 1988 publication from Wisconsin Clearing House estimates some 28 million Americans (including 6.6 million school-age- d children) have or had at least one alcoholic parent - Meaning one of eight Americans is a child of an alcoholic. Children of alcoholics can have any . background, they may be rich or poor, come from any ethnic group, be college dropouts. graduates or high-schoResearch shows that COAs are at least 4 times as likely as other children to become alcoholics. They many times choose to marry alcoholics or people who have other addictions. If you were raised in a home where one or both parents were alcoholic, you are ol A's, B's And certainly not alone. Research estimates that over 25 million adults in the United States were raised in alcoholic households, said Mead. One in eight Americans grow up in alcoholic households, according to the Children of Alcoholics Foundation. For these children, home is often a battlefield, and growing up is a struggle to cope with constant stress and embarrassment with their parent(s). They may grow up feeling depressed, emotionally detached and socially isolated without understanding why they feel that way, said Mead. Most people know if they were raised in an alcoholic family. They may have confusing symptoms and difficulties with intimate relationships. These symptoms may be related to their family origin and the way they were raised. Recovering from ACOA syndrome generally requires seeking outside help and support. Identifying and treating COAs is difficult because denial is a key feature in an alcoholic family. The 1988 publication from Wisconsin Gearing House said some characteristics of ACOAs may include guilt, a fear of CRNC-Libe- ral by Blessing Ream Forum staff writer The creditno credit option may seem like an easy way to maintain a high grade point average, but according to Dean of Records Sheryl J. Phillips, the program is not always the best idea. By choosing this option, students dont receive a letter grade. Instead if they receive a C- - or above in a class, they get a mark of credit (CR) on their report card. Students who receive a D or F get a mark of no credit (NC). Neither mark is counted toward the students GPA. Students can choose the CRNC option . ACOA on Feb. 18 will be at 10 a.m. in the third floor lounge of Carleson Hall. The group will meet through the end of losing control, fear of their feelings, fear of conflict, an overdeveloped sense of responsibility, an inability to relax. They may have difficulties with intimate relationships, have compulsive behavior, have a fear of abandonment, anger and depression as well as many other characteristics. The first meeting of Westminsters April. Those interested in attending the meeting, or who need more information, should contact Mead, at ext. 144 or at her office in Shaw 110. Policy Has So Far Not Been Abused for any course not in their major or minor, and can choose the option up to seven weeks after the class starts. Seven weeks is very lenient, but we still have students who wait until after the deadline to decide if they want their class creditno credit, said Phillips. Students will be disappointed if they wait until after the deadline to decide if they want their class CRNC because their request will be denied. Students usually put off their requests because they are mid-tertests, waiting for the results of said Phillips. .The deadline for this semester is March 13. The reason the CRNC option is not m always the best idea is because classes are an important part of a students education and Phillips said the option allows students to blow them off. We have a lot of students who are really concerned about their grades, so even though they may love the class, they worry they wont get a high grade, she liberal-educati- on said. Phillips said the CRNC option is a good idea if students want to take a class merely for interest, but this rarely happens at Westminster. What usually happens is in classes where teachers have been known to grade harder, of the class ends up using about one-ha- lf ' the CRNC option. To make the option fair to students, teachers have no way of knowing whether a student is taking a class for a grade or for credit only. Teachers send the students grade to the office, and the office changes the grade to CR or NC if the student has chosen that option. The policy is very liberal and getting rid of the creditno credit option has been discussed, but so far it has not been abused. Only about 2 percentof all grades given are creditno credit, said Phillips. Other types of non-lettgrades include withdrawal and incomplete. To receive a grade of withdrawal (W) students must drop the class after the first three weeks of the semester. The withdrawal grade does not figure into their er GPAs. Two or three withdrawals will nothurt, but if I see a transcript with a lot of with- -, drawals, I will wonder what the person is up to, said Phillips. A grade of withdrawal-fai- l (WF)can have if also be received students completed two-thirknow of a class, they are going to fail the class, but want to quit worrying about it. A WF grade is calculated as an F on a GPA, but once the class has been taken again and passed, the F grade is taken off the GPA and the new grade is calculated instead. A grade of incomplete (I) is given if a student who is passing a class cant complete the class because of an unavoidable problem, like an illness or car accident. The student must then make arrangements with the teacher to complete all missed work. Course work must be completed within the first six weeks of the following semester. Once the work is made up the I grade is changed to the grade given by the instructor. If the work is not made up, in most cases the student will receive an F. ds WITH PURCHASE OF ANY ACI10 DURR1T0 Salt Lake City, State St. between 8th & 9th 31 st South & Highland otter.
