Show Commentary . . Gubernatorial Candidate States Reform Ideas For Health Care pusher workers has increased ten times as fast as the number of doctors, when health care now represents 14 percent of the GNP, up from 7 percent a decade ago, and its expected to hit 17 percent by the end of the decade, strong, comprehensive steps need to be taken not the timid, band-ai- d apthe taken and current state proaches by federal administrations. n As someone to be biased in favor of private over public solutions, I, nevertheless, realize that the overwhelming power of insurance companies and their strong control of state legislatures and ourU.S. Congress through their utilization of high-price- d lobbyists are largely responsible for giving us the health insurance Editor's Note: The following is a letter to the editor. As such, we felt obligated to run it, but we will be notifying all other gubernatorial candidates to address the same issues through letters to the editor of their own. Dear Editor: I take exception to the State Legislatures slow, cautious, modest steps to reform health care, as per the governors w recommendations. I believe that no politician has yet presented the right answer, but when there are over 100 different health insurance forms in use in this state alone, when the number of clerical, administrative and other paper- - well-know- go-slo- , mess we are now experiencing. U.S. medicine is the worlds best, if you can afford it. Utahs medicine is among the best in the U.S., if you can afford it. To make it affordable and universally accessible, someone needs to take bold steps, starting with breaking the strangled hold of lobbyists over our so that reform legislature measures can be proposed and gain suphigh-price- well-thought-o- ut port My reform ideas center on: 1. Maintaining the quality we now have 2. Making universal access a reality, and 3. Containing costs, containing costs, ' containing costs! My reform ideas will be presented dur . ing my campaign, and, like my other ideas, the public-at-larg- e will applaud, while the vested interests will attack. Since one mans is another mans loss of income, it is vital that all reform ideas recognize the essential fact that lowering the cost to the consumer must come out of the hide of duplicate services, the multitudinous mountains of paperwork and the vested interests of the powerful insurance companies, all characteristics of our current health-car- e industry. cost-containme- nt Sincerely, Merrill Cook 2989 Sherwood Drive Salt Lake City, UT 84108 . Its harder to get an atheist to come out of the closet than a gay, said Michael Valle, organizer of a public lecture by Michael Martin, a professor of philosophy at Boston University who discussed his book, Atheism: A Philosophical Justification. The purpose of the group, according to the organizers, is not to convert anyone to atheism. They just want atheists to know they are not alone. cpam!
